Defensive Backs Complete Combine Workout

The defensive backs took the spotlight on the final day of workouts at the NFL Combine with several outstanding performances.Several highly regarded prospects had huge workouts that probably guarantee them an early first round selection in April. Safeties Taylor Mays of Southern Cal, Earl Thomas of Texas and Eric Berry of Tennessee were very impressive at the event. Mays ran a low .4.4 time at 230 lbs. He also did 24 reps in the lifting and had a super 41” vertical leap in an excellent workout. Thomas ran in the mid 4.4 time at 203 lbs. He looked sharp in the agility drills. Berry ran a sub 4.5 time with a 43” vertical jump and a 10’6” broad jump

Cornerbacks Devin McCourty of Rutgers, Brandon Ghee of Wake Forest, Amari Spievey of Iowa, Kyle Wilson of Boise St, Kareem Jackson of Alabama and Akwasi Owusu-Ansah of Indiana (Pa) all had impressive workouts that either maintained high grades or moved them up the charts. McCourty of Rutgers is one of the fast rising prospects in this class and ran mid 4.4 time that ranked among the best times for corners. Jackson ran a 4.41 time that moves him up the charts. He showed good COD skills in the agility drills. Wilson did 25 reps in the lifting that was equal to many linebackers. He was fluid in all drills and showed the smooth change of direction skills that impressed many NFL scouts. Spievey ran a mid 4.4 40 time and looked sharp in the agility drills especially the three cone event. Ghee needed a strong performance and ran a 4.45 time that moved him among the top tier of corner prospects.

The NFL Network channel will televise the NFL Combine 2010 event again for several days. There are 329 college players expected to attend the event with over 700 NFL front office personnel for the six day event. Players will go through a week long extensive testing on their athletic, intellectual and psychological abilities by the 32 staffs of each NFL club. Extensive front office personnel including GMs, coaches, directors, scouts and medical personnel will represent each NFL team. Each club will interview up to 62 players over the six day event. NFL Draft 2010 prospects will be put through a series of tests both physical and mental in the biggest sports job market in the business. Once again, many prospects are expected to avoid parts or the entire workout, opting for the friendly confines of their school's track on a pro day in March/ April.

The NFL Combine gives players a chance to impress pro scouts on a level playing field vs all competitors. The entire workout will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium for the second year after years at the old RCA Dome that had a reputation of being a notoriously slow surface thru the early ‘90s before improving over its final years. The new stadium’s surface creates a different yardstick in evaluating speed that should once again prove interesting from a timing perspective for prospects over the 6 day event.

Saints March to NFL Title

The New Orleans Saints finally reached NFL heaven with a thrilling victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. The Saints marched in to NFL history with a dramatic second half comeback to defeat the Colts 31-17 in Miami. It was the Saints first NFL title in the wild 43-year history of the franchise that included the loveable Aint’s of yesteryear to the team that rallied a city to recover from the horrors after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Brees rallied the Saints to upset the Peyton Manning directed Colts with some late game heroics.
“We just believed in ourselves and we knew that we had an entire city and maybe an entire country behind us,” said Brees, the game’s MVP. “What can I say? I tried to imagine what this moment would be like for a long time, and it’s better than expected.”

“Four years ago who ever thought this would be happening when 85 percent of the city was under water from (Hurricane) Katrina,” Brees said. “Most people not knowing if New Orleans would ever come back or if the organization and the team would come back. ... This is the culmination of that belief and that faith.”

Brees tied a Super Bowl record with 32 completions, the last a 2-yard slant to Jeremy Shockey for the winning points with 5:42 remaining in the game. He went 32 for 39 for 288 yards and 2 TDs while completing 29 of his final 32 passing attempts in a brilliant clutch performance. Head coach, Sean Payton, managed to boil it down to three words: “Brees was magnificent.”

Brees was named the MVP of Super Bowl XLIV after completing a Super Bowl record 32 passes. Of the seven incompletions, at least one was dropped while another was a spike. Two passes went for TDs and he also threw for a two-point conversion. For the postseason, Brees completed 71% of his passes with 8 TD passes and no interceptions while beating three divisional winners – the Cardinals, Vikings and Colts. The Saints trailed in each of those crucial victories by at least 7 points, a first time for the NFL postseason.

For the '09 season, Brees put up incredible passing numbers - a 70% completion rate with 4388 yards passing and 34 TDs and 11 interceptions. His leadership can not be measured as he has become the leader of a team that rallied around him and a city in pursuit of NFL history.

Saints’ coach Sean Payton deserves applause for several gutsy calls over the game especially the onside kick that opened the 2nd half that sparked the Saints’ comeback. The much maligned Saints defense made several key stops with Tracy Porter’s 74-yard TD interception return off an errant pass from Manning clinching the victory for the Big Easy.

For the '09 season, the Saints finished 16-3 overall and won three postseason games after winning only two in their previous 42 year history. They beat Arizona, Minnesota and Indianapolis (16-3) — all division winners — for their first title, scoring 107 points and allowing only 59.

Senior Bowl - Day One
QB Tim Tebow of Florida drew incredible attention after his illustrious SEC career. He struggled during the opening workout on Monday in drills with a few fumbles when lining up under center. His delivery is a huge issue and he will have to show progress in his mechanics and adjusting to a pro set to dispel concerns about his pro potential. We will have more over the course of the week.

OG Mike Iupati of Idaho checked in at 6’5” and 325 lbs and is an imposing lineman. He moves well and is a player we project that will move easily into the first round with a strong week here. Safety Taylor Mays of Southern Cal is an imposing athlete who made a huge hit that drew raves from the fans. RB Joique Bell of Wayne St (Mi) checked in at just under 5’11” and 223 lbs. He has the look of a pro runner, but has a lot to prove this week related to ball security, in addition to catching and blocking in a pro set.

LB O’Brien Schofield of Wisconsin was injured when an offensive lineman fell on him during drills. He sustained an ACL injury that will require surgery and end his postseason. It probably jeopardize his 2010 season. He carried a top 100 grade into the Senior Bowl with the possibility of moving into top 50 if he proves he can play up at linebacker in the 3-4 scheme. He played in the East-West game last week and was a player we interviewed and thought he would be one of the rising prospects in this draft class with a good week in Mobile.

DT Terrence Cody of Alabama checked in at 6’4” and 370 lbs. That number probably costs him a top 50 selection unless he can prove otherwise in drills this week. On day one, he was sluggish and slow to counter the initial blocks. WR Jacoby Ford of Clemson checked in at 5’9” and 181 lbs. He was very quick off the line with the burst of speed to separate in coverage. He can hit the home run as a playmaker, but he must prove that he can get off the line vs the bump and run. He will test out very well at the NFL Combine and may be the fastest player in the entire draft class. Safety Nate Allen of South Florida was impressive in both run defense and pass coverage. He moves well and lined up vs the slot receivers and showed cornerback like coverage skills.

DE Greg Hardy – Ole Miss
Defender Greg Hardy stood out as the best overall prospect at this critical All-star event. Over the practices, he was a dominant performer who combined all the physical skills to rush the passer and support the run. He will receive an invitation shortly to go to the Senior Bowl event that is scheduled to begin next week. Hardy combines both the physical and athletic skills to be an every down NFL starter. He can beat an offensive lineman with both speed and power. He has answered some questions about his injury riddled career with a strong performance at the practices. With a strong performance in the Shrine game, he could elevate himself into the top of the first round. He heads an impressive group of defensive linemen at this All-star classic that has drawn heavy attention from NFL scouting staffs. DL pro prospects Willie Young and Doug Worthington have drawn attention with fine showings in the individual drills.
