Body:
From the Prez to the Olympics 1 Houston - Reggie Bush - RB - USC The Texans have to get it right here after a poor ’05 performance especially on the offensive side of the ball. Bush is a difference maker at the NFL level. He gives this offense a player that must be accounted for on every snap and makes wideouts Andre Johnson and Eric Moulds more dangerous with the free safety mainly focusing on him. His presence also gives QB David Carr a weapon to balance this offense and capable of being the most improved unit in the league next fall if they can add a few offensive linemen in the following rounds. Alternate Pick: Mario Williams - DE - North Carolina St. 2 New Orleans - Mario Williams - DE - N.C. St. The Saints have done some nice things this offseason and hope to parlay this selection into either an immediate impact performer or additional early picks. They will attempt to move out of this spot and are still pursuing several possibilities but want to remain in the top 5-10 selections. Mario Williams is a super blue chip prospect who would be difficult to pass on here, though certainly not their top priority. They love OT D’Brickashaw Ferguson but hope to move back in the top five and land him plus another top 50 selection. Alternate Pick: D’Brick Ferguson - OT - Virginia 3 Tennessee - Matt Leinart - QB - USC Head coach Jeff Fisher will help to land their future franchise passer here with most likely his choice of any prospect in this class. They are debating Matt Leinart and Vince Young here. With Steve McNair’s future clouding in Nashville, Leinart is the most developed by far and with prior experience with OC Norm Crow, he figures to get the call and a possible starter in this offense. Alternate Pick: Vince Young - QB - Texas 4 New York Jets - D’Brickashaw Ferguson - OT - Virginia The Jets have clear needs especially on the offensive side of the ball. They hope to land their future starting passer here in addition to major problems along their offensive line. They love OT D’Brickashaw Ferguson here and will debate him and QB Jay Cutler. They are prepared to select either of them, in addition to Mario Williams. They like Ferguson to nail down the left side tackle spot and will consider coming back in the early 2nd round for QB Brodie Croyle. Alternate Pick: Jay Cutler - QB - Vanderbilt 5 Green Bay - A.J. Hawk - LB - Ohio St. The Packers have major needs especially on the defensive side of the ball. They love Mario Williams and A.J. Hawk and have earmarked them as their top two choices if they stay at this selection. Thompson looks to retool this veteran club and is looking for additional top 50 selections. They will stay with last year’s top pick QB Aaron Rodgers has their future starter. They are considering both a Javon Walker deal and trading back in the top ten to jump start this fading veteran team. *** They also have a trade on the table for wideout Javon Walker to Denver for a #2 pick (37th overall) plus conditional picks next spring. *** Alternate Pick: Mario Williams - DE - N.C. St. 6 San Francisco - Michael Huff - S - Texas The 49ers front office has two #1 picks after the deal with the Broncos. They have many needs especially at wide receiver and in the secondary. They will need a strong class this April to return to respectability. They have many major needs entering this draft and will probably address defense this early with either Hawk or Huff blue chip safe selections. They hope to add offense later in this round with receiver the highest priority and a position they may address a few times over the draft. Huff gives them a rookie starter and a fixture in this battered secondary that has failed with several high picks over recent drafts. Alternate Pick: A. J. Hawk - LB - Ohio St. 7 Oakland - Vince Young - QB - Texas The Raiders have fallen tremendously since their Super Bowl appearance three years ago. They need to address their future starting passer here and they have the top three QBs ranked and earmarked for this selection. They like Vince Young the most but do not rule out Jay Cutler who has the arm strength to play the vertical game that Al Davis loves. Alternate Pick: Jay Cutler - QB - Vanderbilt 8 Buffalo - Haloti Ngata - DT - Oregon The Bills hope to land one of the top two tackles here Ngata or Bunkley. Ngata is not as versatile as Bunkley and could be the odd man out in this scenario. They have clear needs with both lines and the secondary high priorities. With Michael Huff on the board, he could be the selection with other quality defensive tackles expected to be on the board in the early 2nd round. Huff gives them the versatility to move defenders to their best position. Alternate Pick: Michael Huff - S - Texas 9 Detroit - Jay Cutler - QB - Vanderbilt The Lions GM Matt Millen will not use a top 10 selection on a wide receiver this spring after three in a row for that unit. They will consider QB Jay Cutler here despite signing two veterans in Jon Kitna and Josh McCown this offseason. Cutler gives them a future starter and could be the answer here. They also love Michael Huff and would give them an early starter and fixture in this troubled secondary. Alternate Pick: Michael Huff - S - Texas 10 Arizona - Brodrick Bunkley - DT - Florida St. The Cards hope that one of the top three QB prospects falls to this spot. That is a possibility but certainly not a sure thing. They would love to land Jay Cutler to groom as Kurt Warner’s replacement. They have DT Brodrick Bunkley on their short list and hope to couple him with former FSU teammate Darnell Dockett. They also have OT Winston Justice high on their wish list and he is probably available at this selection. He would address a major problem at offensive tackle. Alternate Pick: Jay Cutler - QB - Vanderbilt 11 St. Louis - Vernon Davis - TE – Maryland The Rams have made many changes this offseason mainly on the defensive side of the ball. They love Vernon Davis here and hope he gives them an added dimension to their big play passing game. They also love Brodrick Bunkley as FA losses and have him on their short list if Davis is off the board. Alternate Pick: Brodrick Bunkley - DT - Florida St. 12 Cleveland - Winston Justice - OT - USC The Browns have many needs to both sides of the ball especially the offensive line and front seven on defense. They like a number of linebackers here including Greenway and Lawson for their 3-4 set. They have OT Winston Justice on their short list and he is a high priority to address their concerns to protect the edge for young starting passer Charlie Frye. Alternate Pick: Chad Greenway - LB - Iowa 13 Baltimore - Chad Greenway - LB - Iowa The Ravens are at the crossroads in this draft and look to address their biggest needs offensive line and front seven on defense. They love Winston Justice and would draft him for the right offensive tackle spot where he could start immediately. He may be select just in front of them and force them to move to defense with this selection. They will also entertain moving back with no #3 pick this spring. They could address the DT spot if Bunkley was available, not highly probable. They like Greenway very much and he would be a fine addition for their front seven. Alternate Pick: Winston Justice - OT - USC 14 Philadelphia - Santonio Holmes - WR - Ohio St The Eagles parted ways with problem child Terrell Owens this offseason. They will have to address this area early this spring and probably in the opening round. They love Santonio Holmes very much and could be their pick here. They need playmakers at wide receiver and either Holmes or Chad Jackson could be excellent additions here. Alternate Pick: Chad Jackson - WR - Florida 15. Denver (Atlanta) -Chad Jackson - WR - Florida The Broncos have several highly regarded skilled position players earmarked here with either receiver high on their list. They could shock fans if runner DeAngelo Williams was on the board and select the talented tailback. *** They have a deal on the board for veteran Packer wideout Javon Walker which would have a strong bearing on this selection. *** Alternate Pick: DeAngelo Williams - RB - Memphis 16. Miami - Antonio Cromartie - CB - Florida St The Dolphins have many needs especially on their changing defense and offensive line. They most likely miss on the top two OT in Ferguson and Justice. They hope to address a highly regarded defender here with players like corner Cromartie and linebackers Manny Lawson, Chad Greenway and Ernie Sims on their short list. They also want to add a DT and will address it fairly early, though they do not have a #2 pick after the trade for QB Daunte Culpepper. Alternate Pick: Ernie Sims - LB - Florida St. 17. Minnesota - DeAngelo Williams - RB - Memphis The Vikes may address their backfield with this prospect expected to be available. They also have issues in the secondary after two FA losses and defenders like Cromartie and safety Donte’ Whitner on their short list. In a deep LB class, they may have their choice of one of the top four prospects and will entertain Greenway, Ryans and Sims here. Alternate Pick: DeMeco Ryans - LB - Alabama 18. Dallas - Manny Lawson - LB - N.C. St. The Boys hope to continue to build a tough young defense and have not address offense early since the mid ‘90s. They have several prospects earmarked with their first round selection with Manny Lawson and Kamerion Wimbley giving them a fine pass rusher opposite DeMarcus Ware. They like OT Winston Justice very much but most likely they would have to trade up to select him. Alternate Pick: Kamerion Wimbley - LB - Florida St. 19. San Diego - Tye Hill - CB - Clemson The Chargers could go in a number of directions. They have needs at cornerback, safety, linebacker and OT. They would love to select Antonio Caomartie but he is most likely gone a few picks earlier. They will give backers like Manny Lawson strong consideration here. They also like fast corner Tye Hill and Jimmy Williams here. Safety Donte’ Whitner is on their short list and a real possibility at this selection. Alternate Pick: Antonio Cromartie - CB - Florida St 20. Kansas City - Mathias Kiwanuka - DE - B.C. The Chiefs’ hope to address their secondary early and often this spring. They have prime needs on the corner and could address it twice and possibly early with each. They like Cromartie and Hill and have them on their short list. They need more pass pressure and could select Kiwanuta here. They also like DE Kamerion Wimbley here to play move in their 4-3 set. Alternate Pick: Tye Hill - CB - Clemson 21. New Eng - Kamerion Wimbley - LB - Florida St. The Patriots have many clear needs at linebacker, wide receiver and in the secondary. They hope to land an edge pass rusher early and have Lawson and Wimbley on their short list. They will attempt to address this early with more depth in the secondary. They like a number of cornerbacks like Hill, Williams and Youboty. They also like both top wideouts Holmes and Jackson and would jump at a chance to land them. Alternate Pick: Chad Jackson - WR - Florida 22. San Francisco (Denver -Wash) - Ernie Sims - LB - Florida St. 49ers obtained this in a pre draft trade and may use this pick to move up further in the top five. They love Reggie Bush and they could shock fans with the move to obtain the dynamic Bush. They would love to land another playmaker for young QB Alex Smith and Jackson or Holmes would be a fine addition. They like a number of linebackers here like Sims, Greenway and Ryans. Alternate Pick: Chad Jackson - WR - Florida 23. Tampa Bay - Eric Winston - OT - Miami The Bucs have major needs along the offensive line, linebacker and in the secondary. They could address the line with their choice of either Eric Winston or Marcus McNeill. Sims would be a fine addition at a thin area to couple with Derrick Brooks. Alternate Pick: Ernie Sims - LB - Florida St. 24. Cincinnati - Jimmy Williams - CB - Virginia Tech The Bengals have a few clear needs especially along the offensive line and in the secondary. They have prime needs in their secondary that could be addressed twice over the first day. They like corners Hill, Williams and Youboty plus safety Donte’ Whitner at this selection. They will also probably come back with a tight end over the first day. Alternate Pick: Tye Hill - CB - Clemson 25. N. Y. Giants - Donte’ Whitner - S - Ohio St. The Giants have a few prospects earmarked here. They would love to land corner Antonio Cromartie but he is most likely over the board. They will most likely address the back seven here with corners Hill, Youboty and Williams considered. They would love to land LB Chad Greenway or Bobby Carpenter here. Whitner could be available here and he can compete for the nickel corner role in addition to a fine playmaker at either safety spot. Alternate Pick: Bobby Carpenter - LB - Ohio St. 26. Chicago - Johnathan Joseph - CB - South Carolina The Bears signed CB Ricky Manning but he faces some off the field issues after recent incident. They could address this spot early with clear needs at cornerback, tight end and offensive tackle. They probably have a chance at cover men like Johnathan Jospeh and Jimmy Williams. They also like OT Eric Winston at this spot. Alternate Pick: Eric Winston - OT - Miami 27. Carolina - Laurence Maroney - RB - Minnesota The Panthers will look to address their backfield early in this draft. They like Maroney very much and have him on their short list, though clubs like the Colts and Steelers are considering moving up for him. They also like DE Tamba Hali here and he is a viable option at this selection. Alternate Pick: Tamba Hali - DE - Penn St. 28. Jacksonville - Tamba Hali - DE - Penn St. The Jaguars will look to address a pass rushing tweener here if prospects like Hali or Wimbley are available. They also have their secondary high on their need list and will consider a top prospect here especially if Joseph or Whitner are still on the board. They also like OT Eric Winston and have him on their short list and a highly possible selection here. Alternate Pick: Johnathan Joseph - CB - S. Carolina 29. N.Y. Jets (Atl-Den) - Nick Mangold - OC - Ohio St. The Jets will address their offensive line several times this draft and maybe with both their top selections. They love Mangold and he would be a fixture in the pivot after losing starter Kevin Mawae this offseason. They could also address the front four with a defender like Hali possibly on the board. Alternate Pick: Tamba Hali - DE - Penn St. 30. Indianapolis - DeMeco Ryans - LB - Alabama The Colts hope to address their running back spot early in the draft and would like to land Laurence Maroney here. They have needs at linebacker and like DeMeco Ryans and D’Qwell Jackson here and both are solid fits for a Tony Dungy defense. Alternate Pick: Laurence Maroney - RB - Minnesota 31. Seattle - Davin Joseph - OG - Oklahoma The Seahawks have some needs along the offensive line and in their secondary. They like guards like Joseph and Jean-Gilles here after losing Steve Hutchinson in FA. They also like corners like Johnathan Joseph and Kelly Jennings here. Alternate Pick: Johnathan Joseph - CB - S. Carolina 32. Pittsburgh - Sinonice Moss - WR - Miami The Steelers have some clear needs at wide receiver, cornerback and linebacker. They like Moss and think he can replace Antwaan Randle El immediately. They love linebacker Bobby Carpenter and hope he slides to the last selection in the first round. Alternate Pick: Bobby Carpenter - LB - Ohio St. 2nd Round 33 Houston - Jason Allen - CB - Tennessee 34 New Orleans - Kelly Jennings - CB - Miami 35 New York Jets - LenDale White - RB - USC 36 Green Bay - Max Jean Gilles - OG - Georgia 37 Denver (San Fran) - Brodie Croyle - QB - Alabama 38 Oakland - Claude Wroten - DT - LSU 39 Tennessee - D’Qwell Jackson - LB - Maryland 40 Detroit - Ashton Youboty - CB - Ohio St 41 Arizona - Marcus McNeill - OT - Auburn 42 Buffalo - Leonard Pope - TE - Georgia 43 Cleveland - Bobby Carpenter - LB - Ohio St. 44 Baltimore - Daniel Bullocks - S - Nebraska 45 Philadelphia -Thomas Howard - LB - UTEP 46 St. Louis - Darnell Bing - S - USC 47 Atlanta - Ko Simpson - S - South Carolina 48 Minnesota - Abdul Hodge - LB -Iowa 49 Dallas - Andrew Whitworth - OT - LSU 50 San Diego - Babatunde Oshinowo - DT - Stanford 51 Minn (Miami) - Richard Marshall - CB - Fresno St. 52 New England - Joseph Addai - RB - LSU 53 Washington - John McCargo - DT - N.C.
