For Complete Seven Round Final NFL Mock Draft ‘08
Update Report - Available now * underclassmen
1. Miami - Jake Long - OT - Michigan
The Dolphins signed the huge tackle days before the NFL Draft ’08. It’s smash mouth time in Miami. Long will couple with Vernon Carey to form a physical tackle tandem along with FA guard Justin Smiley. Long is one of the fastest picks in the draft and capable of being a dominant right tackle and a good left tackle. They had major needs along the offensive line prior to those two additions and this allows them to focus on skill positions and pass rushers and cover men thru the rest of the process. They are debating LB Quentin Groves at the #32 spot vs QBs like Chad Henne, Joe Flacco and Brian Brohm. They also could see a talented receiver on the board there like Limas Sweed or James Hardy.
Alternate Pick: None
2. St. Louis - Chris Long - DE - Virginia
The Rams are debating two defensive linemen here with Chris Long and Glenn Dorsey the only prospects of interest. They have received offers from clubs in the top ten for this selection and will entertain all offers right up to the selection. Chris Long addresses the bigger need on the outside while Glenn may be the best overall prospect in the entire draft. They are also debating receivers on the early 2nd round like DeSean Jackson and James Hardy. Offensive tackles will get attention especially in the top 100 selections.
Alternate Pick: Glenn Dorsey - DT - LSU
3. Atlanta - Matt Ryan - QB - Boston College
The Falcons are hoping Matt Ryan falls to this spot so they can turn on the page on the Michael Vick fiasco. Ryan would be a great image and start for a new era and a prospect with the development to be a good early NFL starter. They have many needs but a boatload of high selections with three #2 and two #3 picks that allows them to collect a bumper crop of prospects to rebuild a changing club. They could not go wrong with DT Glenn Dorsey here and come back in the early 2nd round with QBs like Henne, Brohm or Flacco.
Alternate Pick: Glenn Dorsey - DT - LSU
4. Oakland - Glenn Dorsey - DT - LSU
The Raiders have not done many things right over the past six years. They need to get this right after another poor ’07 performance despite a good draft class that should become a nucleus of this club going forward. They will debate a few prospects like Chris Long, Glenn Dorsey and Darren McFadden. They want to trade back and hope the Ravens or Cowboys are interested in moving up. They hope to recover a #2 pick for the DeAngelo Hall trade. Chris Long would carry on the heritage of his Hall of Fame father Howie Long with the Raiders. Glenn would be a great replacement for the retired Warren Sapp and a cornerstone defender. McFadden brings the star factor that Al Davis likes, but the Raiders have a deep backfield and not a high need area.
Alternate Pick: * Darren McFadden - RB - Arkansas
5. Kansas City - * Vernon Gholston - DE - Ohio St.
The Chiefs are in limbo at this spot. They probably will not have a chance at Matt Ryan with this pick, the prospect they like the most. The second best offensive tackle does not merit this spot in the top 5 picks. They also must replace DE Jared Allen who was traded for another #1 pick of the Vikings. They will consider DE Vernon Gholston and Derrick Harvey if they retain this selection. They also like offensive linemen Ryan Clady and Branden Albert here and have both high on their list.
Alternate Pick: Matt Ryan - QB - Boston College
6. New York Jets - * Darren McFadden - RB - Arkansas
The Jets have a few prospects earmarked here. They would love to land QB Matt Ryan, runner Darren McFadden or LB Vernon Gholston at this spot. McFadden would give them the big play weapon they need on this offense. Gholston would be a perfect compliment to FA addition Calvin Pace for their 3-4 scheme.
Alternate Pick: * Vernon Gholston - LB - Ohio St.
7. New Eng (San Fran) - Keith Rivers - LB - Southern Cal
The Patriots have a few key needs that must be addressed mainly in the secondary and at linebacker. They will consider Keith Rivers or Jerod Mayo if Vernon Gholston is off the board at this selection. They will most likely have their choice of any cornerback like McKelvin or Rodgers-Cromartie and either would be great additions for their changing secondary.
Alternate Pick: Leodis McKelvin - CB - Troy University
8. Baltimore - * Ryan Clady - OT - Boise St.
The Ravens love Matt Ryan and hope he somehow falls to this spot. They have also spoken to clubs in the top five about moving up to land Ryan. They have also listened to offers to trade back in the top 20 picks if Ryan can not be selected. Without Ryan, they will look to either offensive tackles like Ryan Clady or Branden Albert or cornerbacks McKelvin or Rodgers-Cromartie at this position
Alternate Pick: Leodis McKelvin - CB - Troy University
9. Cincinnati - Sedrick Ellis - DT - Southern Cal
The Bengals hope to have their choice of DT Sedrick Ellis or LB Keith Rivers at this position. Both are excellent fits for their defense and early NFL starters. There is a good chance that either or both prospects will be on the board here. They could add an additional #1 pick if they trade wideout Chad Johnson, though they have turned down the Redskins offer of their #1 and additional picks for the Pro Bowl receiver. They will also consider DE Derrick Harvey here after losing DE Justin Smith in FA.
Alternate Pick: * Derrick Harvey - DE - Florida
10. New Orleans - Leodis McKelvin - CB - Troy University
The Saints will look to address their weak back seven with their secondary and linebacking unit the key areas. They like corners McKelvin and Rodgers-Cromartie very much and have them on their short list. They also like LB Rivers and Mayo here.
Alternate Pick: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - CB - Tennessee St.
11. Buffalo - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - CB - Tennessee St.
The Bills took a few key needs that have to be addressed in this class. They have needs in the secondary on the corner and at the wide receiving corps. The receiver class lacks a super blue chip prospect and does not warrant a selection here. The strong cornerback class has several top 15 prospects with McKelvin, Rodgers-Cromartie and Mike Jenkins all getting strong consideration here. They also have needs at linebacker, though not their highest priority but they could surprise with either Keith Rivers or Jerod Mayo if available here.
Alternate Pick: Leodis McKelvin - CB - Troy University
12. Denver - Branden Albert - OT/OG - Virginia
The Broncos have many clear needs along their offensive line, middle linebacker, wide receiver and at safety. They love Ryan Clady and Branden Albert and project both to left tackle. They should have a chance at one of them at this spot. They could address the offensive line more than once and love centers Steve Justice and John Sullivan on the 2nd day. They like a number of receivers like Devin Thomas and Limas Sweed, though both should be available a little latter in the first round.
Alternate Pick: Ryan Clady - OT - Boise St.
13. Carolina - * Derrick Harvey - DE - Florida
The Panthers have major needs along both lines and will most likely address these areas in the early rounds. They love DE Derrick Harvey here and hope to add this fine pass rusher if available. They could draft into the deep offensive tackle class here with Chris Williams and Jeff Otah highly coveted prospects and early NFL starters.
Alternate Pick: Chris Williams - OT - Vanderbilt
14. Chicago - * Rashard Mendenhall - RB - Illinois
The Bears have some major needs on their offensive line in addition to questions at the running back and QB positions. They could surprise and select runner Rashard Mendenhall here. They also love OT Chris Williams and Jeff Otah and have both on their short list. They are impressed with QB Chad Henne and Joe Flacco and have them on their short list for the early 2nd round.
Alternate Pick: Chris Williams - OT - Vanderbilt
15. Detroit - Mike Jenkins - CB - South Florida
The Lions have many needs as usual with secondary right at the top of the list. They love the top corners and hope Jenkins or Rodgers-Cromartie are on the board here. They carry early NFL starting grades. They have DE Derrick Harvey on their wish list but he is most likely gone by this selection. They also love RB Mendenhall but also should be selected a few picks earlier than this spot. They are hoping one of the three QBs among Brohm, Henne or Flacco is available on round two.
Alternate Pick: * Rashard Mendenhall - RB - Illinois
16. Arizona - Chris Williams - OT - Vanderbilt
The Cards would be thrilled if OT Chris Williams falls to this selection. They have major needs especially at cornerback and will consider Mike Jenkins if available. They also have Aqib Talib on their short list. They are hoping runners Mendenhall and Stewart fall to this spot and have both on their list of prospects here.
Alternate Pick: Mike Jenkins - CB - South Florida
17. Kansas City (Minnesota) - Jeff Otah - OT - Pittsburgh
The Chiefs are hoping one of the premier prospects falls to this selection. They would love to land OT Jeff Otah here, though what they do at the #5 overall selection will dictate the directions. They also are prepared to choose CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Mike Jenkins here.
Alternate Pick: Gosder Cherilus - OT - Boston College
18. Houston - *Jonathan Stewart - RB - Oregon
The Texans hope to add a starting feature back and love both Mendenhall and Stewart here. Stewart would need a little time to heal from toe surgery. They also have OT Jeff Otah and Chris Williams high on their list and could land either prospect if available. They could address the running back spot later with their #3 pick. They love runners there like Ray Rice, Jamaal Charles, Matt Forte’ and Kevin Smith there.
Alternate Pick: Gosder Cherilus - OT - Boston College
19. Philadelphia - *Jerod Mayo - LB - Tennessee
The Eagles have several need areas that must be addressed with wide receiver and linebacker spots high on this list. They would love to add LB Jerod Mayo here for their aggressive defense. They could surprise here with the selection of fast rising receiver Devin Thomas here. They will address OLB later on the first day with Curtis Lofton and Dan Connor on their list.
Alternate Pick: * Devin Thomas - WR - Michigan St
20. Tampa Bay - Kentwan Balmer - DT - North Carolina
The Bucs have clear needs especially at cornerback, defensive tackle and wide receiver. They love CB Mike Jenkins, though he is most likely off the board. They also like corners Antoine Cason and Aqib Talib here. They should have their chance at the 3rd rated DT in Kentwan Balmer for the inside. They also have needs at the wide receiver spot and could have their choice of any prospect on the board. They like Thomas, Sweed and DeSean Jackson here. Jackson would also give them much need return impact ability.
Alternate Pick: Antoine Cason - CB - Arizona
21. Washington - * Devin Thomas - WR - Michigan St
The Redskins have already tried to deal this pick for veteran receiver Chad Johnson and were denied. They will consider both receivers Devin Thomas and Limas Sweed here. They also have needs at linebacker and will give Jerod Mayo strong consideration here if available. They have strong interest in DE Phillip Merling at this spot and he could be the choice if they feel he is fully healthy. They will consider the safety spot in the top 100 selections and possibly try to trade up in round two for DaJuan Morgan and Kenny Phillips.
Alternate Pick: Limas Sweed - WR - Texas
22. Dallas (Cleveland) - Limas Sweed - WR - Texas
GM Jerry Jones has two #1 picks and hopes to address the wide receiver spot with one of these selections. They also have needs at running back and cornerback that will most likely be addressed with early selections. Sweed is a good fit here with both starters TO and Terry Glenn over 34 years of age. They also love Devin Thomas but he is most likely off the board here. They have offered this selection to the Bengals for Chad Johnson but will have to up the ante to land the Pro Bowl receiver.
Alternate Pick: Antoine Cason - CB - Arizona
23. Pittsburgh - Gosder Cherilus - OT - Boston College
The Steelers have several major need along their offensive line and most likely draft into the deep tackle class. They love Williams, Otah and Cherilus and hope at least one of them is still on the board here. They would love to add cornerback Aqib Talib or Antoine Cason for a secondary that gave up too many big plays last fall. They would then hope to address the offensive line in the 2nd and 3rd rounds with multiple selections.
Alternate Pick: * Aqib Talib - CB - Kansas
24. Tennessee - * DeSean Jackson - WR - California
The Titans hope to address two main areas, wide receiver and cornerback. They have to replace Pac Man Jones at both cornerback and in the return game. A prospect like DeSean would solve two problems and he is most likely here at this selection. They also have wideouts Thomas and Sweed high on their list. They also like corners Antoine Cason and Brandon Flowers, in addition to DE Phillip Merling at this spot.
Alternate Pick: Antoine Cason - CB - Arizona
25. Seattle - * Felix Jones - RB - Arkansas
The Seahawks hope to add a playmaker and have Felix Jones high on their list at this selection. They like his all purpose skills and would consider Chris Johnson for those roles in the 2nd round. They like DT Kentwan Balmer here and have him on their short list along with DE Phillip Merling.
Alternate Pick: * Phillip Merling - DE - Clemson
26 Jacksonville - * Phillip Merling - DE - Clemson
The Jaguars took some losses along the line due to trade and FA losses. They love DE Phillip Merling and to a lesser degree Quentin Groves at this spot. They still have issues in the secondary despite adding FS Reggie Nelson last spring. They love safety DaJuan Morgan here and he could be a surprise selection.
Alternate Pick: Quentin Groves - DE/LB - Auburn
27. San Diego - * DaJuan Morgan - SS - North Carolina St
The Chargers are hoping to trade back here to add more top 100 selections. Thy have no #2, 3 or 4 picks and could add another top 50 selection with a club like Atlanta moving up. They like safety DaJuan Morgan here. They also like CB Antoine Cason and OT Sam Baker here if no traded is completed.
Alternate Pick: Sam Baker - OT - Southern Cal
28. Dallas - * Aqib Talib - CB - Kansas
The Cowboys’ hope to add a cornerback early in the draft in addition to the trade that brought veteran ‘Pac Man’ Jones to Dallas. AqibTalib and Antoine Cason are high on their list and will be given strong consideration here. They are also debating runners Felix Jones and Chris Johnson to couple with veteran Marion Barber.
Alternate Pick: * Felix Jones - RB - Arkansas
29. San Francisco (Indianapolis) - * Calais Campbell - DE - Miami
The 45ers have some clear needs on their front seven at end and linebacker. They also have needs along the offensive line and surprisingly at QB. They also are interested in more impact off the edge and a prospect like LB Quentin Groves could be a surprise pick here. They like QB Brian Brohm after a poor early career by former top overall pick QB Alex Smith. They could surprise fans and draft Brohm here. They have DE Calais Campbell on their short list and a prospect capable of playing end in the 3-4 set.
Alternate Pick: Brian Brohm - QB - Louisville
30. Green Bay - Brandon Flowers - CB - Virginia Tech
The Packers have age on the corner and will most likely address this position early and possibly with two selections. They have both Brandon Flowers and Antoine Cason on their short list and either would be fine additions to a troubled area. They will most likely have a chance at runners like Felix Jones or Chris Johnson here. They will address the TE spot in round two and like John Carlson and Dustin Keller who would give them a missing dimension to their passing game.
Alternate Pick: * Calais Campbell - DE - Miami
New England Patriots - forfeited pick due to the Spygate caper
31. N.Y. Giants - * Kenny Phillips - FS - Miami
The Giants hope to address their secondary early this spring with an emphasis on the safety spot. They have both DaJuan Morgan and Kenny Phillips on their short list. Either would be fine additions, though Morgan is most likely gone by this pick. They also like junior linebackers Jerod Mayo and Curtis Lofton here.
** They also have a trade with the Saints for Jeremy Shockey for their #2 pick and safety Roman Harper. **
Alternate Pick: Antoine Cason - CB - Arizona
