Oklahoma Pro Day - Malcolm Kelly and Reggie Smith

Oklahoma Pro Day - Malcolm Kelly and Reggie Smith struggle in late Workout

There was a special Oklahoma on-campus workout on Wednesday for several Sooner players with highly regarded juniors WR Malcolm Kelly and DB Reggie Smith the main attraction. Each player has been rated among the top prospects at their respective positions and worked out for pro scouts for the first time prior to this year’s NFL Draft. Kelly has been unable to workout because of knee and thigh problems while Smith has been unable to workout due to a broken foot that put his draft stock in jeopardy. Those injuries could cost them a first round grade on April 26th. Both were considered sure fire first round prospects prior to the injury issues that lead to an inactive postseason.
Approximately 37 scouts representing nearly every NFL team visited the campus. The OU workout was on their indoor training facility field turf surface, though not on a fast Astroturf surface. Malcolm Kelly and Reggie Smith were measured and tested in several agility and non-contact football drills under the watchful eyes of the scouts in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft.
Kelly came in just under 6’4 and 227 lbs. and ran poorly with times of 4.68 and 4.75 in the forty that leaves some major questions about his draft status. His workout and size is reminiscent of Southern Cal’s Mike Williams a few years ago when he came in too big and much slower than expected in a late workout. Smith was equally disappointing with times of 4.65 and 4.68 in the forty. Both players were upset they did not run on Astroturf where times are consistently faster. Neither player has another workout scheduled with the NFL Draft ’08 fast approaching and 15 days away. Kelly was recently timed at 4.47 on Astroturf. Indeed, immediately after he works outs, Kelly flew to Cincinnati for a visit with the Bengals which have the 9th pick overall this year. He also has visits with the Vikings and Steelers set over the next 10 days. Kelly and Smith did not participate in OU's first Pro Day on March 11th.
