Talented junior corner is coming off a huge performance the past two seasons as one of the premier defenders in the Big East that earned him first team conference honors. Darrelle has the package to become a top flight pro cover man for the NFL, combining the size, speed, quickness and instincts to become a shutdown cover man as a pro. He has the agility and change of direction skills necessary to match up in man coverage with the ball instincts to make interceptions. He improved his stock with a strong ‘06 showing that influenced him to declare in January. He is a well built athlete who moves very well and is quick to react to routes and the ball in flight. He also has fine punt return skills and had 2 TDs on returns over his short career that will allow him to compete for that role immediately as a pro. He needs some work on his bump and run technique and reading routes after playing only three seasons, though he did start every game but one over his career. He is a fluid and quick cover corner that has the size, AA and strength to play all the responsibilities for the position with fine range and speed with quick footwork and flex in his hips to match up in coverage. In run support, he gets off blocks well and makes sure tackles at the LOS or in the openfield. He is a physical guy who is not afraid to mix it up and get his nose into the pile. He has good hands that have allowed him to be a top interceptor over his short career, in addition to his return duties. As a junior, he started all 12 games and made 39 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 interceptions and 4 PBU, earning first team Big East honors for that performance. Over his final season, he was a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award after scoring 3 TDs, including two on interception returns and one on a thrilling 73-yard punt return vs West Virginia. As a sophomore, he started all 11 games and made 41 tackles, 2 FR including 4 picks and 9 PBU, in addition to the starting return duties. He earned 1st team Big East honors. Over his career, he made 8 interceptions with 25 PBU while starting 34 of 35 games with the lone non starting game was at Notre Dame when he played a significant role. At the combine, he did not workout except for the lifting when he did 16 reps. At the Pitt pro day, he ran impressive forty times of 4.41 and 4.39 with a 38 VJ and 10’5 BJ. He performed well in the agility drills especially the 3 cone event. He had a 4.08 short shuttle and a very good 6.56 three-cone drill. That performance probably guarantees him a mid to late first round grade. In pass coverage, he has a smooth motion with the ability to turn easily from his back pedal and get to full sprint quickly. He has the ability to break on the ball well with the hitting power when he gets there to separate the receiver from the ball. He closes nicely on the ball with the hand-eye coordination and ball skills to deflect the pass once he reads the play properly. He has the quickness and the ability to read keys and locate the ball. He is a good man cover defender that has quick feet, balance, and ability to flip his hips and turn and run with wide receivers. He can ride the hip of receivers and is very adept at using the sideline for help. He is a good zone player that has developed better skills to read the QB and receivers, adjusting quickly in coverage. He has fine ball reactions with good timing and ability to position himself to make a play on the ball. He will play the ball well in flight with good range and enough makeup speed to cover in the deep game. He can jump and adjust to the ball in flight with the skills to make a play on the ball. He combines good size, speed, smarts, toughness and instincts to play early in the NFL especially in a heave Cover 2 scheme like the Bucs, Colts and Patriots. He displays well-developed cover skills with the ability to play several techniques and pick up schemes easily. He is best suited for a cover 2 scheme where he can be an early starter or nickel corner in that coverage. He is similar to Ty Law in size, speed and athleticism and in overall development leaving college. Savvy physical prospect with good AA and a high level of development and the coverage skills to become a starting NFL corner. He should be selected in the 1st round with the Chargers, Jets, Saints and Chiefs all interested. Top 30 prospect and fine NFL starter with a nice upside within a short time. Playmaker as punt returner is an added bonus. Draft Projection: 1st Round
