The NFL Combine ’07 came to an end this week with 327 pro prospects who attended the event completing an extensive evaluation process. A few of the highest names QBs Brady Quinn and JaMarcus Russell opted not to run or throw at the event but most other highly regarded prospects did participate in most of the events. Quinn did lift and did a fine 24 reps @ 225 lbs. on the bench. Over the weekend, there were reports that his stock is falling which is typical media nonsense that gets publicized every year at this time. Quinn has never been out of the top five on our board and would never get out of the top ten selections on value and need alone for the April player selection meeting.
Highly regarded prospects like Adrian Peterson, Joe Thomas and Calvin Johnson all had strong performances that will probably retain their top five ranking. Several other junior prospects had very impressive workouts namely tight end Greg Olsen, corner Chris Houston and DT Alan Branch. Other Division 1 players that responded with strong performances were wideout Jason Hill of Washington St. and LB Tim Shaw of Penn St. Both improved their stock significantly with big workouts. Each could move up further after NFL scouts review their game film over their senior seasons.
Small college players, receivers Jacoby Jones of Lane College and Onrea Jones of Hampton, tight ends Michael Allan of Whitworth College and Ben Patrick of Delaware and linebackers Chad Nkang of Elon, Zak DeOssie of Brown and Justin Durant of Hampton all stood out at the event and helped their cause significantly. They are seven of the highest rated small college prospects entering the final weeks before the NFL Draft ’07.
The evaluation process now moves to the on campus workout part of scouting analysis and will continue through the eight weeks leading up to the NFL Draft ’07. Most workouts will be over the next month and be the final part of the scouting process.
