QB Jameis Winston Named ACC Rookie of the Week for Fifth Time
For the fifth time this year, Florida State redshirt freshman QB, Jameis Winston has earned ACC Rookie of the Week. This time, he earned the honor following his dominating first-half performance in the Seminoles' runaway 49-17 win over NC State last weekend. Winston has emerged as a surprising Heisman Trophy candidate and must be considered as a top two player for the prestigious award at midseason along with Oregon soph QB Marcus Mariota.

We will have a special Heisman Trophy update with all the top candidates including another ACC hopeful, QB Tajd Boyd of Clemson. We will interview both Winston and Boyd this week and provide a Heisman report after a teleconference. Winston leads the Seminoles in a major clash with a trip south to Miami this week that will have major national title ramifications. Boyd travels to Virginia while Mariota gets a bye week before a huge matchup with Pac 12 rival Stanford next Thursday night.
Winston was named early in the week as a Maxwell Award, one of 16 semifinalists for the Collegiate Player of the Year. As a redshirt freshman, he has emerged as one of the premier impact performers in the nation, leading the Seminoles to a #2 ranking in the current BCS charts. He was the top ranked HS quarterback when he came out of Hueytown HS in 2011. He redshirt as a true freshman, watching E.J. Manuel performed brilliantly on his way to a #1 draft selection by the Buffalo Bill. For the 2013 season, the 6’3” 215 lbs. athlete Winston has completed 128 of 183 passes for 69.9% completion with 23 TDs for 2177 yards and 4 interceptions. He has been sacked 12 times for 92 yards while running with the ball 44 times for 126 yards and 3 TDs.
His fast assent this fall into the national spotlight off his first season puts him into the Heisman Trophy race and possibly the second freshman ever to win the award. He hopes to follow Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel who was the first freshman ever to win the coveted award last season. Manziel attempts to join Archie Griffin as the only repeat Heisman award winner. He is having another top performance, though only considered a top five candidate currently.
