College Title Chase and Heisman Trophy Award
Frank Coyle has been a Heisman Trophy voter for the past 15 years
The upcoming 2010 college season will begin the Blog this month.
This presents an interesting group of premier players rated as the top Heisman Trophy candidates. For the first time, there are two former Heisman Trophy winners in Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow returning with each hoping to become only the second player in college history to win two of the games’ most coveted award. Only riunning back Archie Griffin of Ohio St. has won two Heisman Trophy Awards during the Woody Hayes power teams of the 1970s
This year the top three vote getters return from last year, all QBs, Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow and Colt McCoy are each back at the helm with highly ranked teams that should make the both the Heisman Trophy award and national championship race highly competitive battles with the winning player and team probably claiming both trophies. Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford and Texas’s Colt McCoy face a key matchup in early October in the Red River Rivalry that will have a strong bearing on both the Heisman Trophy and National title races. I voted for Colt McCoy last season and felt the late loss to Texas Tech probably cost him the coveted award. If a Texas defender could have tackled TT wideout Michael Crabtree at the yard line we might be discussing Colt McCoy pursuing a second Heisman Trophy award this fall. Such is college football.
Florida’s Tim Tebow will lead the Gators in an attempt to repeat as national champions and his second Heisman award. Only two teams since the 1980s have repeated as national champions and the Gators certainly have several critical components inline to claim another title. Tebow actually received the most first place votes in the Heisman Trophy last year, but came in 3rd in the overall voting. Florida plays in the tough SEC, but faces an average schedule this fall with no Alabama, Auburn or Ole Mss on the regular schedule. A key early SEC matchup with LSU in October could have a strong bearing on both the national title and Heisman races and eventual winners in those prestigious awards
Heisman Trophy Preseason Candidates
QB Sam Bradford - 6’3” 215 lbs - Oklahoma
Athletic fourth year junior QB has had an incredible early career with the Sooners that includes winning the Heisman award last season. He is a big tough passer who has a quick compact delivery with good touch and fine accuracy. He has progressed quickly in all aspects of play and has gained valuable experience after starting the past three seasons in this premier program. His chances of repeating as the Heisman winner may hinge on his performance in the Red River Rivalry vs Texas’s Colt McCoy in a head to head classic. He is a good runner and shows the ability to throw effectively on the move as well as move quickly within the pocket. He needs to refine his game in all areas related to the NFL and will be working with many new offensive starters this fall.
QB Tim Tebow - 6’4” 220 lbs. - Florida
Savvy senior passer has developed nicely in the efficient pro style Gator. He has a good arm with a nice touch and the quick release to get the ball to receivers. He has shown fine arm strength with nice development especially in his accuracy. He won the Heisman award as a sophomore in ’07 and actually earned the most first place Heisman ballots last year when he finished 3rd in the overall balloting. He looks to compete vs Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy for both the Heisman award and national title in what looks like the winner takes all competition. He shows the ability to make the difficult throw and the quickness in the pocket to avoid a rush. His decision making is his greatest asset which has minimized mistakes throughout his early career. He is a terrific runner in the mold of Steve Young with the ability to beat you with his arm or feet.
QB Colt McCoy - 6’3” 210 lbs. - Texas
Savvy senior QB has started the past three seasons and hopes to elevate his game over his critical final season. He has made some big plays and put up fine numbers in the Longhorns balanced attack. He faces a critical October schedule that puts him head to head with Sam Bradford and Zac Robinson that could be the deciding games for both the Heisman award and Big 12 title. He is coming off a strong performance as a junior and is capable of another huge effort and leading the Longhorns the national title. He needs to impress during key matchups to be in the hunt for the elusive Heisman Trophy.
QB Terrelle Pryor - 6’5” 230 lbs. - Ohio St.
Athletic sophomore QB looks to lead the Buckeyes spread offense again and are the leaders for another Big Ten title. He is an incredible runner with tailback type skills including natural running skills and breakaway speed. He came on strong over his true freshman season gaining valuable experience vs top competition. He is exceptionally quick in the pocket and capable of making big plays with his feet and pressures a defense in a unique way. He needs further development in his throwing mechanics to be ready for the NFL game along with further work on recognizing defenses. He faces both Southern Cal and Illinois in September which could propel him into the thick of the Heisman race early. His fine athleticism makes him one of the premier athletes at the position
QB Zac Robinson - 6’3” 215 lbs. - Oklahoma St
Slick throwing senior QB looks to continue his impressive display in this wide open passing attack. He hopes to make a strong impression in head to head battles with Texas and Oklahoma QBs McCoy and Bradford. He came on strong over his sophomore and junior campaigns that make him one of the nation’s most productive passers. He has the talent to lead this explosive offense to national prominence working with talented weapons wideout Dezmon Bryant and runner Kendall Hunter. He is quick in the pocket and capable of running or spraying the ball around to a number of receivers with a nice understanding of defenses after extensive valuable playing experience.

Bryant Suspended Indefinitely for Lying to NCAA
Photo - Dez Bryant - Oklahoma St
One of the top prospects at the receiver position for the NFL 2010 Draft, Oklahoma St junior wideout Dez Bryant has been ruled ineligible for violating an NCAA bylaw. The powerful 6’2” 215 lb. receiver was ruled ineligible by the school after he reportedly lied to the NCAA officials about a visit and workout at the home of former NFL star defender Deion Sanders earlier this fall. Bryant is a blue chip prospect for the NFL and is coming off a huge sophomore performance last season when he had 87 receptions with 19 TDs for over 1,500 yards while averaging over 17 yards per catch. We ranked him in the Top 20 Prospects for the NFL Draft 2010 with Top 10 potential if he declares for the pro game this January.
The NCAA interviewed Bryant twice earlier this year about allegations at which time he denied that he had visited Sanders. That was proven false, but the fact that he lied to the NCAA is a violation that led to the suspension. Oklahoma St University has already begun the process of applying to the NCAA on his behalf for reinstatement. This incident does not involve anyone associated with the OSU football or athletic department staffs, any employee of the university, alumni, donors, or any third-party affiliated with OSU.
OSU is taking this step because Bryant failed to openly disclose to the NCAA the full details of his interaction with a former NFL player Sanders who is not affiliated with OSU. Bryant will definitely sit out Saturday at Texas A&M; though he was already listed as doubtful because of a hamstring problem.
I will have exclusive interviews with key people on this matter that will be part of the October Newsletter this month.
The University issued the following statement from Bryant: “I made a mistake by not being entirely truthful when meeting with the NCAA. I sincerely regret my mistake and apologize to my teammates, coaches, OSU fans and the NCAA.”
OSU coach Mike Gundy said: “We are certainly disappointed, but we are moving forward as we would with any challenge during the season.” Due to the ongoing investigation of this matter, OSU has no additional comment at this time.
NCAA Bylaw 10.1 -- Unethical Conduct
Unethical conduct by a prospective or enrolled student-athlete or a current or former institutional staff member (e.g., coach, professor, tutor, teaching assistant, student manager, student trainer) may include, but is not limited to, the following: (Revised: 1/10/90, 1/9/96, 2/22/01)

OSU Ranked #1 by Draft Insiders
Draft Insiders' Frank Coyle Blog begins with the Top 25 College teams for the 2010 season. Frank Coyle will write a regular Blog beginning with the college and NFL season through the NFL Draft 2011.

This season Draft Insiders predicts Ohio St. will win the national title, not a popular choice by every major media outlet or publication. Nevertheless, I feel Ohio St. can get to the title game behind a top performance by talented junior QB Terrelle Pryor who is also be the leading Heisman Trophy candidate this fall. Pryor is our choice to win the Heisman Trophy with a strong 2010 performance
Alabama has been picked by virtually every other College poll off an undefeated 2009 season. They certainly have the talent to repeat and make a run at the national title again, though the tough SEC may be their stumbling block this fall. They have gone through the SEC undefeated the past two season and that is unlikely to three peat.
Notre Dame is not on Draft Insiders Top 25 rankings. The Irish begin the Brian Kelly era that should produce fine clubs in time, but probably not initially in South Bend. He begins with a new starting QB and a new 3-4 defense after several seasons struggling on that side of the ball.

18. Oregon (10-3) - The Ducks must overcome loss of QB Jeremiah Masoli, but they have a talented club that will challenge for the Pac 19 title.

21. USC (9-4) – Trojans begin the post Pete Carroll era behind developing QB Matt Barkley who flashed big time talent at times as a true freshman last season. .
22. Houston (10-4) – The Cougars return virtually their entire offense and QB Case Keenum should produce huge numbers and points in the defensively soft CUSA.
23. West Virginia (9-4) - WV returns 18 starters but their fortunes may depend on first year starting QB Geno Smith.
24. Florida State (7-6) - The Seminoles will find out what life is without Bobby Bowden is after the legendary HC retired after an amazing 34-year coaching career.
25. Georgia (8-5) - The Bulldogs return most of their offense this fall, but only improvement from their battered defense will move them higher in the rankings.

Your the only analyst with Oklahoma and LSU this high. Jerry R - Hog Frog fan
Frank - Buckeyes are a great call. Hope they're holding the trophy in January. Gary - Buckeyes fan.
Frank - Picking against the Tide is dangerous territory. They rule the SEC and are the champs until someone beats them. Boomer - Tide country.
Boomer - I'm well aware the Tide is undefeated in SEC the past two seasons. Also, I go to Tide territory every January for the Senior Bowl - so I'm sure the fans will let me hear it unless of course Ohio St. or some one else wins the title. Frank
Heisman Trophy 2010 Hopefuls
Frank Coyle has been a Heisman Trophy voter for the past 15 years

The upcoming college season presents an interesting group of premier players rated as the top Heisman Trophy candidates. There is a former Heisman Trophy winner in Mark Ingram who is hoping to become only the 2nd player in college history to win two of the games’ most coveted awards. Only Archie Griffin of Ohio St. has won two Heisman Trophy Awards during the glory days of Woody Hayes power teams of the 1970s.
This year the top getter Ingram returns with emerging QBs Terrelle Pryor, Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett, Case Keenum and Kellen Moore, all primed for strong campaigns..Each are back at the helm with highly ranked teams that should make the both the Heisman Trophy award and highly competitive clubs for their conference titles. Runners Dion Lewis and Jacquizz Rodgers had huge 2009 performances that ranks them the highest rated running backs from the East and West regions. .
Heisman Trophy Preseason Candidates
QB Terrelle Pryor - 6’5” 230 lbs. - Ohio St,
Athletic junior QB looks to lead the Buckeyes spread offense to another Big Ten title. He is an incredible runner with tailback type talent including natural running skills and breakaway speed. He came on strong over his first two seasons gaining valuable experience vs top competition. He is exceptionally quick in the pocket and capable of making big plays with his feet and pressures a defense in a unique way. He has made further development in his throwing mechanics to be ready for the NFL game along with further work on reading defenses. He faces Miami in September which could propel him to the top of the Heisman race early. His fine athleticism makes him one of the premier athletes at the position and capable of carrying the Buckeyes to the national title.
RB Mark Ingram - 5’9" 220 lbs. - Alabama
Talented powerful running back was the premier runner in the nation last season when he won the Heisman and Player of the Year honors. He is primed for another big season and is set to be the workhorse runner in this run oriented offense. He has flashed great power and tackle breaking talent that has allowed him to be an unstoppable force in his short playing career. He has fine overall athleticism and shows good natural running especially between the tackles and in short yardage situations. He has shown he can be the man on a game to game basis vs top competition. He has a powerful compact frame with very good body lean and quickness to punish a defense and be his own blocker. He will couple with Trent Richardson to form one of the most potent tandem of runners in recent college history. He will miss the season opener with a minor knee injury.
QB Jake Locker - 6’4” 235 lbs - Washington
Athletic senior QB has had an incredible early career with the Huskies that includes leading the Pac 10 in total offense last season. He is a big tough passer who has a quick compact delivery with good touch and fine accuracy. He has progressed quickly in all aspects of play and has gained valuable experience after starting the past three seasons in this improving program. He is also an excellent runner with over 1500 yards scrambling, In addition to being a very good passer with the ability to throw very effectively on the move as well as move quickly within the pocket. He needs to refine his game in key areas like reading coverage and going through his progressions faster, though he is a highly developed passer with the talent and intangibles to carry a club to a higher level.
QB Ryan Mallett - 6’6” 245 lbs. - Arkansas
Strong armed junior passer has developed quickly in the big play pro style Razorback offense. He has a very good arm with a nice touch and the quick release to get the ball down the field. He has shown excellent arm strength with nice development especially in his overall accuracy. He looks to impress early with a September home game vs national champion Alabama that could propel him to the top of the rankings with a strong performance. Last season, he struggled vs the Crimson Tide and he has this rematch circled for a year to redeem himself. He shows the ability to make the difficult throw and enough quickness in the pocket to avoid a rush. His decision making needs some improvement to minimize his mistakes, many of which were due to attempting to do too much to carry his club.
QB Case Keenum - 6’2” 210 lbs. - Houston
Savvy senior QB is coming off back to back 5000 yard+ passing seasons, directing this incredibly potent offense. He leads a veteran group that includes three receivers who each totaled 1000 yards receiving. He directs this offense flawlessly, displaying a good arm with a very quick release and accuracy. He makes big plays consistently and puts up exceptional numbers weekly that will demand much publicity. He faces a critical late September schedule that puts him facing Pac 10 and SEC clubs that could command even further national publicity. He is coming off a strong performance as a junior and is capable of another huge effort after throwing for an amazing 44 TDs and 5671 yards.
QB Kellen Moore - 6’4” 215 lbs. - Boise St
Slick throwing lefty senior QB looks to continue his impressive play in this wide open passing attack. He hopes to make a strong impression in head to head battles with Virginia Tech and Oregon St. in September that could propel him near the top of this list. He came on strong over his sophomore and junior campaigns when he threw for 64 TD passes and only 13 interceptions, just three coming last fall. He has the talent to lead this explosive offense to national prominence again working with talented veteran weapons on offense.
RB Dion Lewis - 5’9” 190 lbs. - Pittsburgh
Fast compact playmaker looks to return to his ‘09 season form after an impressive 1800 yard rushing and 17 TD performance last fall. He is a strong compact runner who carried an incredible 325 times last fall and has the ability to hit the home run consistently. He has top speed and natural running skills that also allow him to make big plays despite lacking great size and power to run inside. He will be a marked man after last fall and has shown the talent and toughness to answer the call to every challenge over his short career.
RB Jacquizz Rodgers - 5’10” 185 lbs. - Oregon St.
Quick senior tailback has developed into one of the nation’s best backs. He is coming off an impressive ’09 performance when he totaled over 1400 yards and 78 receptions while scoring 22 total TDs. He has very good speed and quickness to get the corner consistently and break a play in the openfield. He slips through the hole quickly with the ability to change directions easily and maintain top speed. He is a good pass catcher who gets into his routes easily and can make things happen after the catch. He will probably get special attention this season and must prove he can be a consistent big game feature back with key early games vs Texas Christian and Boise St.

Bush Surrenders Heisman award
Heisman Trophy Trust Leaves 2005 Award Vacant
After several years of allegations about taking illegal money from agents as an amateur during his Southern Cal career, Reggie Bush finally relinquished the Heisman Trophy award this week. This was long overdue and a situation that hurt all involved, the Heisman Trophy Trust, Reggie Bush, Southern Cal and amateur sports in general..
Bush surrendered the prestigious Trophy before any action was taken by the Heisman Trophy Trust. The Heisman Trust was scheduled to meet this week and indications were they were talking seriously about stripping Bush of this award. Trust President William Dockery said the eight Heisman trustees never decided to take the award from Bush.
As a long time Heisman Trophy voter, I was relieved that Bush forfeited his replica of the 2005 Heisman Trophy, though it came several years late that tarnished the nation’s most coveted amateur award. The decision was disturbing, but certainly necessary after Bush knowingly compromised his amateur status with financial compensation as a collegian. Bush received in excess of $300,000 in illegal benefits from potential agents while a member of the Trojan football program. His denial of any involvement has been consistent over the past five years that drew this sad Heisman story out unnecessarily for years.
Bush said “I find solace in knowing that the award was made possible by the support and love of so many. Those are gifts that can never be taken away" in a short statement this week. He stated that he surrendered the Trophy in respect to the Heisman Trophy Trust and other Heisman winners.
Bush won the Heisman Trophy in a landslide vote over Texas QB Vince Young. In fact, the first place votes were about 10 to 1 in favor of Bush in one of the biggest margins in voting history. I voted for Bush off his electrifying performance that included over 2800 all-purpose yards during the 2005 season. He averaged an incredible 8.7 yards per rushing attempt. His brilliance over that season is indisputable, but his off the field action is a gross violation of the NCAA rules. The NCAA committee ruled in June 2010 that Bush was ineligible for the 2005 season for receiving the benefits.
The Heisman Trophy Trust announced shortly after Bush returned the trophy that the Heisman award would remain vacant. The trust never asked members to vote related to taking the award away from Bush or if the runner up Texas QB Vince Young should be awarded the trophy. I concur with the Heisman Trust decision on both issues. The Heisman Trust is a charitable organization that does nationwide charity work and made sound decisions to protect the integrity of the award.
Southern Cal also returned its copy of Bush's Heisman while currently dealing with sanctions levied on the Trojans football program related to this and other violations. The stiff sanctions were a result of the NCAA finding Bush had received in the neighborhood of $300,000 in illegal benefits from agents during his Trojan career. Bush was declared ineligible for the Trojans' 2004 bowl game plus his Heisman-winning season 2005 season for being found to have accepted the illegal benefits. The Heisman Trophy's bylaws state that a student-athlete must be in good standing in order to qualify for the award. Bush's decision to voluntarily relinquish the trophy spared him further embarrassment of the Heisman Trust seeking a vote on the issue.
Bush declared for the NFL Draft 2006 after his outstanding junior season and went on to be a #1 draft selection of the New Orleans Saints. He developed into a key part of their Super Bowl championship season last year.

Cam Newton Wins Weekly Honors
Auburn Heads BCS Poll
The BCS ranks Auburn #1 this week in their second poll that began in mid month. Auburn was our most underrated team in the nation in August and one that I ranked in the Top 15 teams during the preseason. Auburn was not ranked in the Top 25 teams by any other poll or by any of the major network preseason shows. In fact, the SEC national shows did not even begin to mention Auburn until October despite a perfect record. The emergence of young Auburn QB Cam Newton is the hottest topic in college football. He is the clear leader in the Heisman Trophy race as we enter the final six weeks of regular season play. Newton is a unique athlete at 6’6” 250 lbs with natural running skills that poses major problems for a defense. He can outrun any linebacker and run over any defensive back. He has already set a new SEC rushing record for QBs, breaking long standing SEC records in the process. This past weekend, he led the Tigers to a major victory over rival LSU who also entered the game undefeated. Newton has rushed for over 100 yards in just 8 games, surpassing all SEC QB performers including legends Jimmy Sidle, Pat Sullivan and Tim Tebow. Newton rushed for 217 yards on 28 carries and 2 TDs vs LSU while Auburn pounded the Tigers for 440 total yards on the ground. It was the 4th straight game that Auburn rushed for over 300 yards with Newton the key catalyst and performer. He set these new rushing yardage (1006) and TD (26) records in only eight games. His 49 yard TD run is a highlight film that may be the signature play of the year that earns him the Heisman Trophy in December.
The college football season hits the midseason mark with an unusually broad range of opinions on the #1 team in the nation. Draft Insiders.com ranks Texas Christian #1 off their perfect record into late October. They are not rated higher than #4 on any of the four other major team polls. Those major polls have changed dramatically weekly as their #1 teams, Alabama, Ohio St. and Oklahoma have all lost recently on consecutive weeks. DraftInsiders.com ranked Ohio St. #1 in August and retained that status until losing to Wisconsin two weeks ago. TCU has not received the credit due for building a fine program and every poll has them behind Boise St., mainly off the Broncos win over them in the January 2009, Fiesta Bowl. That game should have no bearing on rankings in October 2010, but unfortunately polls continually rated teams off last season when many of those players are no longer with their clubs. College football changes dramatically from year to year with many clubs moving up quickly in the standings with new surprise players changing their team overall makeup. It works both ways with highly regarded teams falling quickly with major losses like Florida, Penn St. and Texas this season, all out of the Top 25 teams.
With 7 teams currently undefeated, the rankings will probably continue to undergo weekly changes. Michigan St. faces Iowa this week and could fall easily after the Spartans overcame a scare at Northwestern last Saturday. Oregon has run over every Pac 10 opponent this fall with one of the most explosive wild offenses in the game. They are 7-0 for the first time in 70 years and are ranked #1 in three major polls, the AP, Coaches and Harris. They face a major test this week at Southern Cal who is disqualified from bowl participation this year. The Trojans are 5-2 entering the Oregon game that they look at as their Rose Bowl game this season. They have two weeks to prepare while coming off their bye week and should be pumped up to knock off the exciting Ducks. I see at least three clubs, Oregon, Michigan St and Missouri all falling from the unbeaten ranks this week. It should be an exciting final week of October football that sets up a wild November on the quest for the national title.
College Football Week Eight Notes
Baylor is one of the major surprises this fall that has them ranked in the Top 25 off their 6-2 record. Young QB Robert Griffin is one of the most exciting players in the nation with the ability to beat defenses with his passing or running. They play at Texas this Saturday, facing one of the most erratic and inconsistent clubs thus far this season. The Longhorns have played up and down to the competition with a disappointing 4-3 record that includes a horrible home loss to Iowa St last Saturday. That makes them only a marginal bowl participant currently. The Baylor game is shockingly a must win situation for Texas to impress bowl committees for the postseason. Look for the Longhorns to come out fired up and play at the level that earned them a victory over Nebraska earlier in the month.
Missouri continued their undefeated season with a huge win over Oklahoma. They matched the Sooners through the early action and pulled away with a fine 36-27 win. QB Blaine Gabbert directs this offense very well getting the most out of his skill position players. The Tigers go to Nebraska this week and face a major test that could cost them this perfect record. Nebraska is the class of the Big 12 and this week is their last major test. At 6-1 entering the Missouri game, they could coast in November with four mediocre Big 12 opponents on the schedule. Look for the Cornhuskers to bust the Missou bubble in a national TV game.
West Virginia lost a horrible game to Syracuse. It cost them a Top 25 ranking that currently shows no Big East teams. Syracuse is one of the great stories of the season with HC Doug Marrone a strong Coach of the Year candidate. Syracuse was 4-8 last season and are already 5-2 this fall with five winnable games on the remaining schedule.
Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz of Iowa made a major mistake at the end of the game, calling his final timeout at 12 seconds left in the game when spiking the ball was the proper decision. Ferentz is a fine coach who has built an excellent program at Iowa, but his decision is baffling considering how obvious the decision was at the time. The clock expired when on the next play, the Iowa ballcarrier was tackled inbounds short of the sidelines.

Roy Helu Shines in Nebraska Huge Win over Missouri - Top Big 12 North
Photo - RB Roy Helu - Nebraska
Nebraska running back Roy Helu had an outstanding performance on Saturday that was instrumental in their victory vs then unbeaten Missouri. Helu set a new Nebraska record by rushing for 307 yards and 3 TDs in the key Big 12 win. As a result, the Cornhuskers are in clear control in the Big 12 North after pounding Missouri 31-17, mainly on the explosive running of Helu. Incredibly, he totaled 228 yards rushing on the first 10 carries with TD runs of 66, 73 and 56 yards. He now has 6 TD runs of over 50 yards, the highest number in the nation. He set a new Nebraska rushing record that is impressive when you note the long list of strong feature backs like Mike Rozier, Calvin Jones, Roger Craig and the one and only legendary I.M. Hipp. Helu has moved up significantly among senior pro prospects in a very average class of running backs. His combination of size, speed and power is impressive and his senior production has moves him to the top of the senior class. He is a talent runner that will receive an invitation to the Senior Bowl All-star game in January, the premier postseason game for NFL prospects.
The 2010 college football season continues to undergo a shuffle on certain polls related to the #1 team in the nation. Draft Insiders.com maintains Texas Christian deserves #1 off their perfect record into November. They moved up to #3 in the new BCS poll and face undefeated Utah this week that will reduce the unbeaten teams by at least one club. All the other major polls have Oregon ranked #1 after the Ducks replaced Auburn in the new BCS poll. Oregon remained #1 in the AP, Coaches and Harris polls. The Ducks exploded vs Southern Cal to turn a reasonably close game into an impressive win. They are a wild exciting team that can strike from anywhere with the ability to make big plays on every unit. They have excellent team speed that is amazing and any club that expects to beat them will have to have a fast talented tough defense to withstand their big play potential. They will not be tested again until the end of the season when they face Arizona and Oregon St. in their final two contests. The Ducks running back LaMichael James has moved into strong Heisman Trophy contention off a 239 yard rushing performance that included 3 TDs vs the Trojans. Auburn slipped to #2 in the BCS despite slamming a poor Ole Miss club. They will probably go into the Iron Bowl vs Alabama undefeated with a soft November set of games on the schedule. Young QB Cam Newton improved his Heisman standing with another impressive performance. It is his Trophy to lose in the critical final month of the regular season, though James can overtake him with a weak game or a few mediocre performances.
The ‘Worlds Biggest Cocktail Party’, Florida vs Georgia has lost its luster with two programs off from recent performances. Florida struggles with a young QB in John Brantley and a defense that failed terribly in big tests vs Alabama and LSU. Georgia is simply a lousy team. They have not played defense the past four seasons and the coaching staff is on the ropes to survive after the season. It could be one of the premier coaching openings at the close of the season. The SEC in general is not up to recent standards, but it is still a strong conference overall. Mississippi St. and South Carolina have improved nicely that compensates for teams like Georgia and Tennessee falling significantly in recent seasons.
Two of the previous seven unbeaten, Missouri and Michigan St. fell on Saturday and both were easily man handled by Nebraska and Iowa. It reduced the undefeated clubs to five teams with two, Texas Christian and Utah facing each other this week. TCU has rolled over an average schedule, but gets a major test this week at Utah. The Horned Frogs defense is ranked #1 in the nation and has allowed only 16 points the past five games. Remember TCU pounded Baylor, Oregon St, BYU and Air Force when people suggest the MWC is a weak conference. A victory over Utah this week justifies a shot at the national title.
A few clubs took major hits last week that probably damages their postseason plans. Count Texas, Notre Dame, West Virginia, Miami, Kentucky and Michigan among them. Texas may be the most inconsistent team in the nation. They have lost home games to Iowa St., Baylor and UCLA, unheard of in recent season. With a 4-4 record, they will be hard pressed to go 7-5, though only one quality team, Oklahoma St remains on their schedule. Notre Dame is simply awful and just starting a rebuilding program under Brian Kelly. We took criticism for not placing them in the Top 25 teams in August, but they never remotely deserved to be ranked at any point this year. Miami will probably be without QB Jacory Harris for at least the Maryland game this week after a vicious hit in the loss to Virginia. His health and ability to return to play may be the difference in any major bowl invitation. West Virginia like Miami also fell to 5-3 after a poor performance vs UConn. That comes off a weak effort the prior game in their loss to Syracuse that cost them a Top 25 ranking. They may achieve 8+ victories, but mainly on playing in the poor Big East that has seen most programs take a disturbing step backwards. Michigan lost their third game in a row to go to 5-3 entering November. They faced quality opponents recently after a soft early schedule. They could still achieve a 7-5 record with remaining tough games vs Wisconsin and Ohio St, to complete the season.
Baylor, Syracuse and Michigan St. are three of the great stories of the college season with head coaches Art Briles, Doug Marrone and Mark Dantonio all strong Coach of the Year candidates. Actually, I feel the toughest vote of the year annually is the Coach of the Year award. I have contended that turning around a weak D1 football program into a bowl participant may be the toughest assignment in sports. This year as usual there are a host of candidates for the coach award with Temple’s Al Gooden, Miss St’s Dan Mullen and Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald all outstanding mentors. Add San Diego St’s Brady Hoke and Central Florida’s George O’Leary to that short list. They have turned around marginal D1 programs and each should earn a quality bowl invitation. Coaches like Oklahoma St.’s Mike Gundy, Auburn’s Gene Chizik and Missouri’s Gary Pinkel have done excellent jobs getting good programs to improve off their 2009 bowl appearances.
College Football Week Nine Notes
QB Ricky Stanzi of Iowa has improved his draft stock significantly this fall and has shown a hot hand in big games including the win over Michigan St this past week. He was instrumental in the 37-6 victory over MSU, throwing 3 TD passes in the process. He has improved his arm strength and accuracy that has elevated him to the top of the 2nd tier of pro prospects for the position. His ability to manage an offense has impressed many NFL scouts and has improved his stock overall as a pro prospect. His intangibles and decision-making have been critical in the Iowa success over the past two seasons.
Looking for great games other than Texas Christian vs Utah this week. Schedule includes outstanding matchups with Stanford vs Arizona and Alabama vs LSU and surprisingly Baylor vs Oklahoma St and Boise St vs Hawaii all that should have a huge effect on the Top 25 rankings and bowl matchups. I think Stanford and Baylor are for real to continue their hot streaks. WAC teams, Hawaii and Nevada may be the only teams capable of stopping Boise St. They hope to be primed for an upset over Boise St. Though, Hawaii plays at Boise St. where they have just broke Miami’s home record with their 59th consecutive victory. It broke Miami’s record set from 1985-94. Boise St. is 36-0 vs the WAC at home. Nevada face Boise St at home on November 26th that may be the only contest that separates the wacky Broncos from running the table.

Legendary Penn St. coach Joe Paterno won career #400 with a record comeback victory vs Northwestern. The Nittany Lions rallied from a three TD deficit to win a key Big Ten contest. The milestone win for Paterno came in Happy Valley at Beaver Stadium, the scene of so many critical Nittany Lion victories. With the victory, JoePa became the first major college coach to total 400 win. Only two other football coaches have more wins, Eddie Robinson had 408 with FCS school Grambling State, while John Gagliardi had 477 including this weekend with Division III St. John's, Minn. Robinson was a pioneer for Black College football and established Grambling State as a small college power over his long legendary career. Paterno won two AP national titles with a career record that stands at 400 win 132 losses and 3 losses for an amazing .750 winning percentage. His complete postseason bowl record is 24 victories with 11 losses and 1 tie. With teams changing coaches so frequently, this record may stand forever. Paterno ranks with basketball great coach, John Wooden of UCLA as institutions at the collegiate level for their sports and men that changed the landscape of sports during their legendary careers.
The first week of November brought the usual array of outstanding performances by individuals and teams especially in key games. There were an unusual number of wild high scoring games including the triple overtime contest that Michigan won 67-65 over Illinois. Other games saw Navy win 76-35 over East Carolina, Oklahoma St beat Baylor 55-28, Auburn 62 24 vs Tenn-Chattanooga, Kansas over Colorado 52-45 and Nevada win 63-17 vs Idaho.
TCU certainly showed they justified their high ranking by blasting unbeaten Utah in a key battle of top ten clubs. TCU pounded Utah 47-7 that gives them total command of the MWC and possible BCS title game aspirations. LSU revenged a hard fought loss to Alabama last season with a 24-21 victory in a great game between two SEC powers. The Tigers’ HC Les Miles, the ‘Mad Hatter’ did it again with a gutsy 4th down call on a reverse that made the first down on the game winning drive. Miles is worth the price of admission with his gambling style that at times has included gutsy calls, poor clock management and bizarre plays. His 4th down fake field goal vs Florida, may be the most bizarre play I have ever seen. With the game on the line late in the 4th quarter, he calls for a fake field goal trailing Florida on 4th and 6 yards to go. He calls a pitch to the placekicker of all people and the holder actually bounces the ball to the kicker and incredibly, he makes the first down. The Tigers went on to beat the Gators in a key SEC contest. Those type of situations have been Miles signature plays over his six seasons in the SEC. He has a terrific 59-16 record at LSU with a deep talented roster that can do real damage this season. The Tigers are a young club that will play for SEC and national title consideration annually with this coaching staff and roster. The Alabama loss was their 2nd of the year and eliminates them from repeating as national champions. No excuses and crazy scenarios can make it right - two losses and they do not get into top four bowl games. They are probably the only obstacle left in an undefeated season for Auburn whom they face in Iron bowl in late November.
TCU senior QB Andy Dalton threw for a career-high 355 yards and 3 TDs as the Horner Frogs pounded 6th-ranked Utah, 47-7, in Mountain West Conference action. Dalton completed 21-of-26 passes and threw scoring passes of 26, 93 and 11 yards as the Horned Frogs won their 10th game and remained unbeaten. Despite the impressive win over a top ten club, TCU has received only marginal national support. Whether TCU makes the BCS title game remains to be seen and is probably a long shot without one of the higher rated teams losing over the final month. They have beaten Oregon St., Baylor and Air Force, in addition to Utah. They have all been Top 25 teams at some point this season. That is a tougher schedule than Oregon and Boise St at this point of the year. More importantly, TCU plays defense with a sound system and smart defenders who tackle, a rare skill in many college games this season.
With all the dramatics of the top game matchups and the high scoring contests, the North Carolina win over Florida St. has not drawn much attention. Wide right once again haunted Florida St. on a key field goal as placekicker Dustin Hopkins missed his second late FG from 40 yards out. It was with 7 seconds to go by pushing the kick wide right. That cost them a last second win, as the Tar Heels held on for a 37-35 win in a key ACC battle. The Tar Heels have held up remarkably well despite the broad number of game and season suspensions from a talented club. HC Butch Davis has gotten this club to respond to a tough situation and the Tar Heels have put themselves in position to win the ACC Coastal division. They face Virginia Tech this Saturday that could have a strong bearing on the ACC title game. Miami’s late win over Maryland keeps them ahead of NC and all ties go to the Hurricanes off their 33-10 win over the Tar Heels last month.
College Football Week Ten Notes
Troy's Jerrel Jernigan became the Sun Belt Conference career leader in all-purpose yards in the Trojan's 41-35 win at North Texas. Jernigan had six carries for 89 yards, including a 55 yard run in addition to his four receptions for 57 yards. He accounted for 258 yards totally and was also 2-of-2 passing for 18 yards and 1 TD. He had three punt returns for 28 yards and two kickoff returns for 66 yards. He finished his evening with 240 all-purpose yards, giving him 5,293 yards in his career, a new Troy record. He ranks in our Top 100 Pro Prospects and brings a lot to the table as a pro receiver/returner. He is both fast and quick with natural running skills to become a fine pro playmaker. He is a difference maker at both return duties with a TD as a punt and kickoff returner. He should be in Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl in late January, in addition to being one of the speedsters at the NFL Combine in February.
QB Ricky Stanzi of Iowa continues to improve his draft stock significantly after another impressive effort that included throwing the winning TD pass vs Indiana. He has shown a hot hand in big games including the win over Michigan St this past week.
On the defensive side of the ball, a hot prospect is LSU’s DT Drake Nevis. He has been a difference maker this fall and again came up big vs Alabama in the Tigers critical victory. Nevis had seven tackles (2 solo), one sack, 1 FF and broke up one pass as the Tigers improved to 8-1, 5-1 in the SEC West. He is very quick and shoots the gap to disrupt blocking and make big plays behind the line of scrimmage. He continues to improve his draft stock and has moved into the early rounds. He was on our Senior Bowl invitation list in October and continues to rise up the tackle charts.
I think Stanford is for real and will continue to impress at Arizona St. this week. QB Andrew Luck has shined this fall and some scouts feel he could be the best QB in this class if he declares in January. I still feel he returns to Stanford for the 2011 season unless HC Jim Harbaugh moves on to another coaching job. Stanford wideout Chris Owusu faces the same questions this postseason. He led the ranked Cardinal with nine catches for 165 yards and 1 TD to a 42-17 win over No. 13 Arizona. Owusu rushed once for 12 yards and had four kickoff returns for 84 yards totaling 261 total all-purpose yards. He is a big play performer and very developed as both a receiver and returner to become an impact player in the pro game. QB Jake Locker of Washington sat out with several minor injuries. He is still a blue chip prospect, but a player who pushed the envelope too much by running over the first half of the schedule.
Looking for great games this week – North Carolina vs Virginia Tech, Baylor vs Texas A&M. Schedule includes outstanding matchups with Alabama vs Mississippi St and Oklahoma St vs Texas that should have a huge effect on the Top 25 rankings and bowl matchups.
I think Stanford is for real and continues their hot streak vs a weak Arizona St team. Oklahoma St. better not underrate a disappointing Texas squad. The Longhorns are a huge disappointment this season, but could crash the Cowboys party this an improved defensive performance. They have lost 5 of their last 6 games with only a stunning upset over Nebraska in the win column.

Ryan Broyles Wins Player of Week

The top four clubs remained unbeaten after last weekend with all except Boise St. struggling at times to win. Boise St toasted a weak Idaho club with QB Kellen Moore putting on another excellent performance. Auburn pulled away from a stubborn Georgia club behind a strong offense once again led by QB Cam Newton. Both TCU and Oregon won close games. In addition, five top ten clubs Ohio St., Stanford, Auburn, Oregon and Texas Christian all led or trailed by less than a touchdown in the second half of their victories.
Auburn continues to impress behind record setting QB Cam Newton. Newton is the first QB in SEC history to throw for over 2000 yards and rush for over 1000 yards in the same season. He has totaled 38 TDs thus far this season and is clearly the top Heisman Trophy candidate. I will hold off from any further Heisman Trophy discussion related to Newton until he addresses the NCAA infraction charges related to being offered money by Mississippi St. prior to signing with Auburn. He deserves the benefit of the doubt, but at the same time he must address these issues before they become bigger than his outstanding 2010 performance.
Every poll except Draft Insiders.com who has TCU as the top club, ranks Oregon as the #1 team in the nation. The Ducks dodged a bullet Saturday when they beat a mediocre Cal club 15-13. They will probably maintain their #1 status with a bye week up next and will not play until Nov 26th when they face a tough Arizona club on a Friday night affair. TCU and Auburn are also off next week that gives Boise St. an opportunity to gain ground among voters with two Friday night games coming up vs Fresno St and Nevada.
Maybe the biggest win last week was South Carolina beating Florida 36-14. HC Steve Spurrier of the Gamecocks beat his old club Florida for the first time. What makes it especially gratifying is that the victory gets South Carolina in the SEC title game for the first time ever. The Virginia Tech win over North Carolina allows the Hokies to continue to rise up the charts and overcome their poor 2010 start where they lost their first two games. They are in the Top15 teams currently and could sneak into the top ten before the season is over. HC Frank Benner has done another great job to get and keep this club focused after losing to Boise St and James Madison to start the 2010 season.
The SEC and Big Ten are clearly the top two conferences this season with the Big 12 and Pac 10 following. Two conferences, the ACC and Big East have struggled this fall with the ACC mired in mediocrity and the Big East struggling to field a top 25 club for any length of time.
Wisconsin scored on all 12 possessions last week as they absolutely pounded a hapless Indiana defense 83-20. They did this without starting running back John Clay and center Peter Konz behind a powerful ground game that totaled over 300 yards.
The three service academies have quietly had outstanding performances this fall with Navy, Air Force and Army each showing winning records. That has only happened twice over the past 50 years. Navy is 7-3 while AF is 7-4 and Army 6-4. All of Air Force’s loss has come to quality teams with three in the Top 25. The Army-Navy game this year should be an interesting matchup with both clubs possible bowl participants.
College Football Week Ten Notes
Oklahoma’s receiver Ryan Broyles had another strong effort in the Sooners 45-7 blowout of Texas Tech. Broyles had 8 catches for 119 yards and 3 TDs. He set new Oklahoma career records in the process for receptions and TD passes, set by Mark Clayton. He is within the season record of 89 catches he established last season. After Saturday’s win, he has 86 receptions with two regular season games remaining. He ranks in our Top 20 Pro Prospects among senior and junior prospects. He brings a lot to the table as a pro receiver/returner. He is both fast and quick with natural running skills to become a top flight pro playmaker. He is a difference maker as both a receiver and returner with a rare combination of speed, quickness and natural running skills. He should to one of the elite speedsters at the NFL Combine in February if he declares in January.
Texas Christian's all- purpose player, Jeremy Kerley had an outstanding performance in their victory over San Diego St. Kerley caught three TD passes from QB Andy Dalton to help overcome a 14-0 Aztec lead. Kerley shows fine hands and route running with the running skills to make things happen after he gets his hands on the ball.

Mikel LeShoure Wins Player of the Week

The top four clubs remained unbeaten with three clubs idle and only Boise St. playing this week. The Broncos pounded Fresno St 51-0 as they march through the WAC undefeated. They face their biggest test this week at Nevada in what should be a high scoring affair. Boise St’s QB Kellen Moore put on another excellent performance directing the potent offense that has them in the title chase.
Auburn rested last week up along with Alabama waiting for their much anticipated ‘Iron Bowl’ contest this Friday. Auburn hopes to secure a BCS berth for #1 here vs a tough two loss Bama club. The Tide is the defending champion and are capable of pulling an upset here. The Tigers’ QB Cam Newton will be the focus of attention on his march to the Heisman Trophy and possible national championship. TCU and Oregon were also idle. Oregon faces a tough matchup vs Arizona this Friday on a game that has national title implications.
LSU has quietly moved into national title contention but they need a lot of help to move up as a one loss team. They have faced the toughest schedule among top ten teams, but with four undefeated clubs ahead of them they need an upset weekend over Thanksgiving to move up the rankings.
Maybe the biggest win last week was Texas A&M beating Nebraska 9-6. There is no better place for college football than College Station, the scene of many great Aggie victories. The huge win put the Aggies at 8-3 and eligible for a good bowl invitation. Virginia Tech continues their recovery from a 0-2 start with a nice win over Miami. The Hokies are now 9-2 and knocking on the door for the top ten.
The Oklahoma St Cowboys are one of the great stories of the year. HC Mike Gundy has done a remarkable job leading them to their first 10 win season with a 10-1 record. They rank in the top ten and face rival Oklahoma (9-2) in a huge Bedlam matchup this Saturday. The Cowboys (10-1 overall and 6-1 Big 12) are looking to lock up the Big 12 South championship with a win over the Sooners (9-2 overall; 5-2 Big 12). Running back Kendall Hunter rushed for 105 yards on 22 carries and is headed for another Big 12 rushing title at the conclusion of the season. HC Gundy ranks right at the top of the Coach of the Year honors in what should be a very difficult vote.
In one of the most bizarre college football games in history, Illinois blasted Northwestern 48-27 at Wrigley Field. What made the game so bizarre is that both offenses had to play in the same direction due to the bleachers being to close to the playing field at one end. This was the first college game at Wrigley in 40 years and will fit into Chicago lore along with Billy goats and black cats plus the infamous Cubs losing streaks. Illinii running back Mikel LeShoure rushed for a school record 330 yards and 2 TDs.
In the first football game at the new Yankee Stadium, Notre Dame beat Army 27-3. In the home of champions in the Bronx, the Irish became bowl eligible with the victory with another strong defensive performance. They complete their season at Southern Cal before entertaining bowl invitations.
College Football Week Ten Notes
Oklahoma St receiver Justin Blackmon extended his Cowboy receiving records with his 10th straight 100 yard receiving and TD game. Blackmon had 10 catches for 130 yards and 1 TD. It brings his 2010 season totals to 85 receptions for 1415 yards and 16 TDs, working with emerging passer Brandon Weeden. As a third year sophomore, he could declare for the NFL Draft 2011 in January if he wants to leave Stillwater.
Nevada running back Vai Taua is an integral part of the Wolf Pack’s high-powered attack. He has set a new NCAA record with 24 games of over 100 yards on the ground. He is a highly developed back with the power to run inside and the quickness to get to the outside. He shows fine hands as an outlet receiver and is one of the more well-rounded and developed backs in the nation. He has moved up the charts as a pro prospect and with a strong showing in the postseason, he could be selected right after the top tier of running back prospects.

Cam Newton Wins Player of Week Honors For Bama Victory
Photo - Andrew Luck - Stanford
The last complete weekend of college football brought one of the most exciting series of games of the wild 2010 season. Four teams entered the weekend games undefeated with only Boise St falling from the unbeaten ranks with a dramatic overtime loss to Nevada. TCU, Auburn and Oregon all won leaving the BCS title game still in limbo with one weekend left in the regular season.
The Auburn- Alabama ‘Iron Bowl’ game was a classic that saw the Tigers QB Cam Newton work heroics that puts the explanation mark on this year’s Heisman Trophy award. His second half heroics will live in SEC lore as the Tigers came back to shock the defending champion Tide 28-27. Alabama falls to 9-3 and out of the top 15 in every poll for the first time since the 2008 season.
Oregon won a wild game vs Arizona that was close over the first half until the Ducks wacky spread offense took over to win a 48-29 affair. The Ducks ranked #1 in every poll, but Draft Insiders poll, but fell out of the top spot in the BCS this week to Auburn. Both clubs play this week with Oregon facing rival Oregon St and Auburn meeting South Carolina in the SEC title game. If either fails to win it opens the door for Texas Christian that completed its second consecutive season undefeated.
The Horned Frogs have a strong defense and a balanced offense that can play with any team in the nation, but most likely will only get a chance at the national title if one of the top two teams lose this upcoming week. TCU announced today it will enter the Big East that improves that struggling conference that receives an automatic BCS berth. That berth gives TCU considerably more leverage chasing the elusive national title. West Virginia returned to the Top 25 rankings giving the Big East conference a lone representative after several weeks with no teams in the elite standings.
In a season of surprise, the Big Ten has a three way tie between Wisconsin, Ohio St and Michigan St. The Badgers rank the highest in the BCS standings that earns them a Rose Bowl bid probably vs Texas Christian. They lost only to Michigan St., but has been clearly the most impressive team in the Big Ten especially over the second half of the season. Ohio St. suffers in head to head mention after losing to Wisconsin in a lopsided defeat. Michigan St. won several games in late dramatics that left their resume third among the Big Ten powers. They did have an outstanding season including beating Wisconsin while overcoming HC Mark Dantonio’s midseason heart attack.
The Oklahoma vs Oklahoma St. ‘Bedlam’ game may have been the best game of the year in the Big 12. The Sooners won a wild matchup 47-41. The victory over in state rival earns them a berth in the Big 12 title game vs Nebraska. The Big 12 title game will mark the end of the Nebraska time in the conference after they joined the Big Ten last year for the 2011 season.
Notre Dame earned some late respect beating Southern Cal that ended their long losing streak to the Trojans. The Irish finish at 7-5 that will earn a minor bowl invitation. Tennessee also had a strong finish that brought them to 6-6 on the merits of a four game winning streak.
College Football Week 11 Notes
Stanford’s Andrew Luck has had an outstanding performance that has been instrumental the Cardinal 11-1 season. He has been a leader on this club that may be the surprise of the season and currently ranked either #5 or 6 in every poll. The Cardinal defense has been excellent especially off recent history. They had three shutouts this season plus four other games of holding opponents to 17 points or fewer. For the season, Luck completed over 70% of his passes in a pro style offense. As a third year sophomore, he could declare for the NFL Draft 2011 in January if he wants to leave the Pac 10. He has developed quickly on the finer points of the position under the tutelage of HC Jim Harbaugh. He has developed a keen sense of reading coverage, well beyond his limited playing experience. He is a top athlete with fine speed, in addition to a strong NFL arm capable of making all the throws. He has the skill set to be the #1 overall selection in either of the next two NFL Drafts.
Florida St senior guard Rodney Hudson and Maryland junior wide receiver Torrey Smith had excellent performances that helped their teams win key ACC games. For Hudson, his effort earned him his third ACC player of the week award of the season and the ninth player of the week honor of his career - a conference record. Against Florida, he registered four knockdown blocks in the Seminoles 31-7 win. Hudson was part of a line that did not allow a sack and helped the offense tally 333 total yards. Hudson was a mainstay as the 'Noles did not allow a sack against Florida's defense and controlled the clock for 33 minutes. It marked the fourth time this season that Hudson, an Outland Award finalist, posted a score of 90 percent or better.
Smith had four touchdowns as the Terps topped No. 21 NC State, 38-31. The four scoring receptions set the school's single-game record, turning in one of the most outstanding performances by a receiver in Maryland history. He set the school's single-game record with four TD receptions, while setting career highs with 14 receptions and 224 receiving yards as Maryland knocked off #21 NC State 38-31. His receiving yardage is the third most in a single game in school history and 18th-most on the ACC books, while his receptions are just two off the ACC mark. Smith's 1,045 yards are the second-most in a season in school history. Smith finished the regular season with 12 TD catches, which is a Maryland record and is tied for the ninth most in a season in ACC history.

Auburn Battles Oregon for #1 in BCS Title Game
Tigers' QB Cam Newton Wins Player of Week
Photo - Cam Newton - Auburn
The final weekend of college football brought about the BCS matchup most fans have talked about since midseason – Auburn vs Oregon. They both won on Saturday that earned them the BCS title game as the #1 and #2 teams in the nation. It should be one of the most exciting title games after a series of wild games over the bizarre 2010 season. Three teams finish the season undefeated with only Texas Christian omitted from the title game. Despite going undefeated for the second regular season in a row, the Horned Frogs could not gather national support to overcome the powers from the SEC and Pac 10 Conferences. After beating an unbeaten Utah team in November, TCU struggled to gain ground especially in the final week facing a 1-10 New Mexico they bombed 66-17.
Auburn and Oregon both won impressively late in the season and are a terrific matchup featuring two explosive offenses. Auburn was once again led by QB Cam Newton as they buried South Carolina in the SEC title that put an explanation mark on the season and most likely the Heisman Trophy award race. He deserves the Heisman Trophy vote off a tremendous season that could be the biggest landslide in the prestigious awards long history. The BCS title game has all the makings of an exciting high scoring game that would be a fitting conclusion to a wild season.
Oregon won a wild game vs Arizona that was close over the first half until the Ducks wacky spread offense took over to win a 48-29 affair. The Ducks ranked #1 in every poll, but Draft Insiders poll, but fell out of the top spot in the BCS this week to Auburn
The BCS title game may still be debated if TCU beats a tough Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl that creates an imaginary game vs the Auburn-Oregon winner. The BCS snub of the Horned Frogs was the main reason TCU joined the Big East last week. As a Big East member the conference receives an automatic BCS bid that gives teams a chance at the national title annually.
BCS Concludes Selection Day With Bowl Pairings
The BCS group announced the teams that have been selected for play in the BCS bowl games, which are the Rose Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, the Orange Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, and the BCS National Championship Game.
"This is one of the best days in college football, and I want to congratulate all the teams who will play in a BCS game, and all the teams who will play in other bowl games this season. For nearly every student-athlete, playing in a BCS bowl game is the number one goal, because it is often the highlight of their careers. This may be why 93 percent of coaches and 70 percent of student-athletes favor the traditional bowl system over a playoff.
"Once again, the BCS has delivered. It has matched the number one and number two teams in the championship game, while delivering outstanding matchups featuring eight other top teams from around the country. It's also preserved the most exciting and dynamic regular season in all of sports," said Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the BCS.

Paralyzed Rutgers Player has movement in Shoulders
Rutgers' Eric LeGrand: 'I believe that I will walk one day'
As the wild 2010 college football season peaks with the national title game Monday night between Oregon and Auburn, the best story of the year continues to unfold. Rutgers' Eric LeGrand continues an amazing recovery from an injury after he was paralyzed from the shoulders down during a tackle while covering a kickoff Oct. 16 against Army.
LeGrand stated this week: 'I believe that I will walk one day'
They are words fans nationwide have waited and prayer to hear and Believe. This situation is close to home with both living in New Jersey and scouting college football talent for 20 years and the Rutgers program extensively during that period. The encouraging update of LeGrand’s health was great news on the eve of the BCS title game Monday night.
In his first interview since the injury, LeGrand told ESPN he feared he would die while lying on the turf at New Meadowlands Stadium immediately after the injury. The full interview aired on an early Friday edition of “SportsCenter” on ESPN. It is also posted in its entirety on scarletknights.com. Also Matthew Stanmyre of ‘The Star-Ledger’ has followed this story extensively with weekly updates.
“Fear of death, that’s the biggest fear that I got because I couldn’t breathe the way I was breathing and I couldn’t move,” LeGrand told ESPN. “Laying out on the ground, motionless, not being able to breathe was the hardest part in thinking, can I die here?”
LeGrand, who has been breathing without a ventilator since November, said he tried to give a thumbs up to the crowd as he was carted off the field but couldn’t. He said he felt as if “1,000 pounds was on this thumb” as he tried to move it.
LeGrand now has movement in his shoulders and full sensation throughout his body, Rutgers’ university announced Thursday. Previously, the school only had said LeGrand has feeling in his hands. Rutgers coach Greg Schiano hears LeGrand’s voice grow more articulate each time he visits him at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange.
Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand was carted off on backboard with neck injury after playing on special teams when he went down after making a tackle in the 4th quarter versus Army. LeGrand lay motionless for seven minutes after tackling kick returned Malcolm Brown, before being carted off on a backboard. He was taken to Hackensack Medical Center.
Schiano remembers well when LeGrand couldn’t breathe on his own. Or when he couldn’t move any part of his body. So those crisp, clear words are immensely important. They mark progress. “You have to look at all the little victories,” Schiano said yesterday during a phone interview, “because it’s not going to happen bang-bang. It’s going to take some time. You have to be encouraged by the little victories.”
While Thursday’s news about LeGrand’s condition was encouraging, it does not mean there has been a change in the status of the injury to his C3/C4 vertebrae. Because LeGrand’s progress has only been sensory and not motor, he would be classified on the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) impairment scale as a level B. LeGrand was classified as a level B last month when it was revealed he had feeling in his hands and no movement below the level of the injury. That means he has between a 20 percent and 30 percent chance of walking again, according to Andrew Hecht, director of the National Football League’s Spine Care Program for Retired Players.
Schiano holds tight to any sign of improvement from LeGrand, a junior defensive tackle from Avenel. The coach said he constantly thinks about his injured player, whose room at Kessler sometimes becomes so crowded with friends, teammates and coaches that Schiano can barely squeeze in.
LeGrand was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for emergency surgery to stabilize his neck. Doctors addressed the media and spoke generally about spine injuries. They would not comment on LeGrand's specific injury which was to the C3-C4 vertebrae of the spine.
“Yeah, it’s difficult, but it’s not nearly as difficult as what Eric has to go through,” Schiano said of the emotional toll. “That’s the way I look at it. I just try and do my best to support he and his family, and that’s really all I can do.
“I’m just anxious. I want everybody to keep Eric in their prayers. I believe in that. You know, the way life is, everybody gets busy with things and I don’t want them to forget Eric.”
“I believe that I will walk one day,” LeGrand told ESPN. “I believe it. God has a plan for me and I know it’s not to be sitting here all the time. I know he has something planned better for me.”
Schiano also has no doubts. “The same fire, the same passion that he brought to playing the game of football he is now bringing to this journey back and his recovery,” Schiano said. “He is just steadfast in what’s going to happen and is upbeat and positive.
“There’s a long road back to moving again ... but I think I speak for all of us here at Rutgers and for Eric and his family that we believe that he eventually will be able to move and do all those things again. It’s just going to take time.”
Auburn Meets Oregon in BCS National Title Game
Cam Newton Wins Player of the Year

The much anticipated BCS title matchup tonight between Auburn vs Oregon highlights the close of the college football season. Most fans have talked about this matchup since midseason with both teams undefeated in strong conferences that earned them the BCS title game as the nation’s #1 and #2 teams. Draft Insiders’ ranked Auburn in the Top 15 in August and rated them as the most underrated team in the nation. Neither Auburn or Oregon was ranked in the top ten of any poll in the preseason.
It should be one of the most exciting title games after a series of wild games over the bizarre 2010 season. Three teams finished the season undefeated with only Texas Christian omitted from the title game. Despite going undefeated for the second regular season in a row, the Horned Frogs could not gather national support to overcome the powers from the SEC and Pac 10 Conferences. The SEC has won five consecutive national titles, an unprecedented run over the past 75 years. The SEC is seeking its 9th national tile over the past 19 years, an impressive run. NFL front offices and scouts are the less surprised of the SEC’s success that annually plays out in the early rounds of the NFL Draft.
Auburn and Oregon were both impressive this season especially late in the 2010 campaign. Overall, this is a terrific matchup that features two explosive offenses but each team fields only average defensive units.
Auburn is led by Heisman Trophy QB Cam Newton after they buried South Carolina in the SEC title that put an explanation mark on the season. The BCS title game has all the makings of an exciting high scoring game that would be a fitting conclusion to a wild season.
Oregon finished with a dominant 2010 performance behind a wacky spread offense that was virtually unstoppable over the regular season. They scored 37 points or more in 11 of their 12 games, an incredible display of offense. The offense is led by running back LaMichael James who had over 1600 yards on the ground and a main weapon in the Ducks explosive attack
With both Auburn’s Newton and Oregon’s James getting most of the limelight after great 2010 performances, this outcome could be decided by other offensive weapons. The Tigers’ dynamic freshman tailback Michael Dyer is primed for a huge game after rushing for 950 yards in 2010. While operating behind a massive Auburn offensive line, Dyer and Newton can keep the high powered Oregon offense on the sidelines. Dyer combines speed and power and should benefit behind the line that has a huge size advantage over the small Oregon front seven. The Ducks rely on fine speed on defense, though the Auburn offense can match that at every position. Dyer is well rested and could be the key catalyst for another SEC national title.
The Ducks ranked #1 in most polls until late in the year when Auburn overtook them for the top ranking. The Draft Insiders’ poll had TCU in the top spot in the BCS at the end of the regular season. The BCS title will still be debated after TCU beat a tough Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl that creates an imaginary game with the Auburn-Oregon winner. The BCS snub of the Horned Frogs was the main reason TCU joined the Big East last week. As a Big East member the conference receives an automatic BCS bid that gives teams a chance at the national title annually.
Prediction: Auburn 37 Oregon 17
The Numbers
Oregon is #1 in the nation in scoring and in total offense. Auburn is #4 in scoring and #7 in total offense. Auburn has already shattered school records with 555 points scored and 6,470 yards of offense gained. The Tigers are ranked fourth nationally in scoring (42.7 points per game), fifth in rushing (287.2 yards per game) and seventh in total offense (497.7 yards). Oregon is a dominant running team with a 304 yards per game average, in addition to 29 TD passes that ranks #16 in the nation in passing efficiency.
Newton produced 29 runs of 15-plus yards this season, tops in the nation. He averaged 10.3 yards on 30 quarterback draws this season and 9.5 yards on 39 scrambles. Over the 2nd half of the season, receiver Darvin Adams had 5 TDs receptions averaging over 30 yards per catch.
For the season, LaMichael James had 281 rushing attempts for 1682 yards and 21 TDs. Over the past two seasons, he had 36 runs of more than 20 yards. That's the most in the nation. Nine Ducks who've caught TD passes. Furthermore, the Ducks rushing attack isn't only about James. Four other Ducks rushed for more than 200 yards. Thomas and backup running back Kenjon Barner combined for more than 1,000 yards and 11 TDs with seven different Ducks scored rushing TDs.
Count on plenty of big plays. Auburn produced 58 plays of 25-plus yards, including 25 TDs. Oregon produced 53 plays of 25-plus yards, including 27 TDs. The TD counts rank first and second in the nation.
Auburn Beats Oregon in Final Minute for BCS National Title
RB Michael Dyer - Auburn
The BCS title game lived up to all expectations in one of the most thrilling championship games in recent memory. When it was all over, #1 Auburn edged out #2 Oregon, 22-19 with a last second short FG deciding the outcome.
It was one of the most memorable title games in recent memory that began with a moment of silence to remember the six victims of the weekend assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson.
It was the 5th straight BCS titles for the SEC in a game that featured big plays on both sides of the ball. In the end, it was Auburn freshman running back Michael Dyer making the difference with a strong performance especially over the 2nd half of the game.
Dyer finished with 143 yards rushing and was chosen Offensive Player of the Game. In the Draft Insiders’ title game Preview yesterday, we felt Dyer would be the key performer who changed the outcome of the game despite the presence of teammate Newton and the Ducks’ James. Newton threw for 265 yards and two TDs while adding 64 yards rushing.
It was Dyer who controlled the second half with his power runner that kept the Oregon offense on the sidelines. He also made the big plays during the critical last drive. With his 37-yard run in the late 4th quarter, the powerful tailback all but sealed the fate of the tough Oregon team. Dyer stole the limelight from his teammate and Heisman-winning QB Cam Newton.
"All I knew was the whistle wasn't blowing and my coach was saying 'Go!'" Dyer said.
On the next series, Dyer ran 16 yards to put the ball to the 1 yardline that set up Wes Byrum's 19-yard field goal with no time left. Byrum delivered his sixth career game-winning field goal that capped a perfect, 14-0 season. It gave Auburn its first title since the 1957 season. and left the Southeastern Conference on top for the fifth straight year.
"Fifty-three years, baby!" coach Gene Chizik said to the cheering crowd. "This is for you. War Eagle!"
Dyer outplayed the highly publicized Oregon tailback, LaMichael James who was held to only 49 yards rushing. The Oregon much hyped offense that had been held to under 37 points only once all year, managed just two TDs by the Tigers physical defense. Nick Fairley, Auburn's junior 300 lb defensive tackle, had a dominant performance that disrupted the Ducks potent offense the entire game. Fairley played up to his elite status with three TFL that includes a sack despite special attention much of the game. He ranks among the premier blue chip prospects if he declares this week for the NFL Draft 2011.
Newton was a catalyst in helping Auburn to its 9th comeback win of this magical season. Newton has now won the national title three straight years — in 2008 as a backup to Tim Tebow at Florida, last year in junior college at Blinn Junior College (Tx) and now with the Auburn Tigers.
He may turn pro this week that would end his turbulent stay with the Tigers that includes an NCAA investigation into his failed recruitment by Mississippi St. The NCAA governing body cleared him to play in the SEC and national championship games.
The SEC improved to 7-0 in BCS title games. Four different teams from the conference have won it in this latest five-year run. Alabama, LSU and Florida twice earned national titles as SEC representatives.

LSU and Boise St Win Big Opening Games
Baylor’s Robert Griffin Wins Player of the Week Honors
Photo – QB Robert Griffin - Baylor
The opening weekend of college football provided a few key matchups in an abbreviated schedule. The LSU vs Oregon and Boise St. vs Georgia were games that would have national and SEC implications. The SEC has won five straight BCS titles and features a few clubs, LSU and Alabama that will be strong contenders again for the national championship. On Saturday night, LSU made a statement with an impressive 40-27 overall performance at Oregon where they controlled the line of scrimmage, displaying fine team speed and power. The Tigers improved their non-conference regular season winning streak to a national best 34 straight games and clearly outmatched the Ducks physically.
The Tigers did this without their starting QB Jordan Jefferson, in addition to playing without wide receiver Russell Shepard who is suspended for violating NCAA rules. Jefferson was supposed to be the starter for the third straight year but he and linebacker Josh Johns were both suspended indefinitely and are facing battery charges in connection wit a bar fight last month.
The biggest upset of the opening week was Baylor shocking TCU. Baylor junior QB Robert Griffin passed for 327 yards (21-of-27) and a career-high 5 TDs as the Bears defeated 14th-ranked TCU, 50-48. Griffin added 38 yards rushing and had a 15-yard reception. It was Baylor’s first win over a ranked opponent since October 30, 2004.
TCU has led the nation in defense the prior three seasons. Last season, TCU allowed only 229 yards per game with the most allowed in the regular season was 361 yards to SMU. The Bears had 360 at halftime and finished with 564. Robert Griffin threw for 359 yards and a career-best 5 TDs.
It was the most yards and points allowed by the Horned Frogs since Sept. 24, 2005, in their 51-50 overtime victory over BYU, which had 614 yards. Starting linebackers Tank Carder, the Rose Bowl defensive MVP and Tanner Brock are top defenders in its 4-2-5 scheme, but there are two new starters up front and some inexperience in the secondary.
Baylor was 0-4 against Top 25 teams last season, when the Bears finished 7-6 with a bowl appearance for the first time since 1994. Their last win over a ranked team was a double-overtime victory over No. 16 Texas A&M in 2004
QB Kellen Moore and highly rated Boise St made a strong statement with a 35-21 season opening win over #19 Georgia at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. Moore completed 28-of-34 passes for 261 yards and 3 TDs against one interception for the Broncos. It was Boise St’s first win over a SEC school. Boise St. finished 12-1 as the toast of the WAC a season ago,
Last year’s BCS champion Auburn dodged a bullet with a comeback victory vs Utah St. They were behind most of the second half as they found what life is without Cam Newton. They will be hard pressed to repeat in the talent SEC and face a very tough midseason schedule that should limit them to an 8-4 record at best with a possible .500 record by the end of November.
The Draft Insiders’ poll had TCU in the top spot last season in the BCS at the end of the regular season. The BCS title was still debated after TCU beat a tough Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl that creates an imaginary game with the Auburn after they beat Oregon. The BCS snub of the Horned Frogs was the main reason TCU joined the Big East. As a Big East member the conference receives an automatic BCS bid that gives teams a chance at the national title annually.
The Numbers
Offensive Player of the Week
QB Robert Griffin – Jr. Baylor
Baylor junior quarterback Robert Griffin passed for 327 yards (21-of-27) and a career-high 5 TDs as the Bears defeated 14th-ranked TCU, 50-48. Griffin added 38 yards rushing and had a 15-yard reception. It was Baylor’s first win over a ranked opponent since October 30, 2004. TCU has lead the nation in defense the prior three seasons.
Defensive Player of the Week
LB Brandon Herron – Sr. Michigan
Michigan senior linebacker Brandon Herron become the first player in school history to post two defensive scores as the Wolverines defeated Western Michigan, 34-10. Herron posted a career-best eight tackles, and returned an interception 94 yards for a TD and added another score on a 29 yard fumble recovery.
There were two runners in the nation who topped the 200 yards rushing last week. Tailback Ray Graham of Pittsburgh rushed 29 times of 201 yards for an impressive 6.9 yards per carry and 3 TDs. Malcolm Agnew of Oregon St. rushed 33 times for 223 yards for a 6.8 average and 3TDs. But Oregon St. lost to Sacramento St when the Hornets went for the two-point conversion for a 29-28 upset win over the Beavers on Saturday.

Marcus Lattimore Wins Offensive Player of the Week
Teammate DE Melvin Ingram Wins Defender of the Week
Photo – RB Marcus Lattimore - South Carolina
The first full schedule of the early weekend college football season is in the books as the top 25 teams begin to take shape. Early season key games saw Alabama pound Penn St. South Carolina beat Georgia and Oklahoma St blasted Arizona in pivotal matchups that will influence this week’s polls.
South Carolina won a wild 45-42 contest vs Georgia that gives the Gamecocks an early advantage in the SEC’s East Division. The loss put additional pressure on Georgia coach Mark Richt to win as the Bulldogs are off to their first 0-2 start since the 1996 season.
While top clubs Oklahoma and Boise St. sit out last weekend, highly rated clubs like LSU, Florida St, Arkansas, Florida, Stanford and Michigan St moved to 2-0 off easy blowout victories. The upcoming weekend will see more conference matchups.
In a great matchup, South Carolina beat Georgia in Athens, Ga. in a seesaw victory that gives them a 2-0 overall and a 1-0 mark in the SEC. It will move South Carolina up in the national rankings this week.
South Carolina's defense was gashed for over 400 yards and senior QB Stephen Garcia had one of the worst performances of his career. Nevertheless, the Gamecocks survived by scoring in several unconventional ways, with DE Melvin Ingram leading the way. The athletic defender scored on a 68-yard run on a fake punt in the 1st half and then returned a fumble caused when by freshman Jadeveon Clowney of Georgia QB Aaron Murray and recovered the ball for a five yard TD.
While the SC offense was inconsistent, sophomore running back Marcus Lattimore rushed 27 times for a 176 yards and a TD. Lattimore was are sleeper pick for the Heisman Trophy and has put back to back 100 rushing games. He was his best down the stretch vs Georgia when he gained 113 of those yards in the second half. The Gamecocks finished with 395 yards of total offense.
Melvin Ingram was selected as our Defensive Player of the Week and the SEC’s Special Teams Player of the Week. Ingram is an athletic 6’2” 275 lbs. defender who took a direct snap on a fake punt and rambled 68 yards for a TD that gave the Gamecocks a 14-13 lead over Georgia heading into halftime. He also caught the onside kick at the end of the game to seal the victory. On defense, Ingram recovered a fumble and ran it five yards for a TD late in the fourth quarter that put the Gamecocks up by 10 points, 45-35.
The win was big for Carolina with Georgia considered its biggest competitor in the pursuit for the SEC East Division title. The Gamecocks won the East title for the first time in 2010.
In another crazy matchup Michigan won a dramatic contest vs Notre Dame with a last second comeback. QB Denard Robinson threw a 16-yard pass to Roy Roundtree with two seconds left, lifting the Wolverines to a 35-31 win over the Irish in front of over 100,00 fans in the first night game ever played at Michigan Stadium. Robinson also threw a 21 yard TD to Vincent Smith with 1:12 left, giving Michigan its first lead.
Robinson completed 11-of-24 passes during the exciting game and threw for 338 passing yards and 4 TDs against the porous ND secondary. He was very productive on the ground, running 16 times for 108 yards and 1 TD in a terrific overall performance.
LSU has a short week to prepare for its SEC opener against Mississippi St this Thursday night in Starkville. The third-ranked Tigers turned their attention to the Bulldogs right after dispatching of Northwestern St, 49-3. The Tigers beat then-No. 3 Oregon, 40-27, in the opener and now have outscored their first two opponents by an average of 44.5 to 15.
LSU has allowed only 91 rushing yards in two games and an average of 1.7 yards per rush. In their opener vs Oregon, LSU blasted the Pac 10 power with an impressive 40-27 overall performance at Oregon. The Tigers improved their non-conference regular season winning streak to a national best 35 straight games with the win over NW St.
Alabama coach Nick Saban settled on QB AJ McCarron who went 19-for-31 for 163 yards, 1 TD and no interceptions in his first career start on the road, a 27-11 win over Penn St. The Bama defense looks dominant and sets the stage for a few great SEC matchups in the ensuing weeks.
Tennessee QB Tyler Bray threw for a career-high 405 yards, passed for 4 TDs and ran for a fifth score in the Vols 45-23 win over Cincinnati. Bray completed 34 of 41 passes as the Volunteers got their first win over a non conference BCS opponent in six tries. This is their first 2-0 start since the 2006 season.
Houston QB Case Keenum has lost anything after last year's knee injury, you wouldn't know it. He continued his assault on the NCAA record book with five TD passes as the Cougars rolled past North Texas. .
Florida International picked up a signature win and solidified its position as the Sun Belt favorite. The Panthers beat a Big East member for the first time in its short history with Friday's 24-17 victory at Louisville, and the national TV audience got a good look at what T.Y. Hilton can do with just a little room. The speedy senior had a school-record 201 receiving yards, taking a pair of first-half passes from Wes Carroll 74 and 83 yards to the house.

Florida’s Chris Rainey Wins Offensive Player of the Week

With the college football season beginning to take shape, a number of teams hold a 3-0 record that demands national attention. Teams like Cal, Georgia Tech, Michigan, San Diego St, South Florida, Clemson and North Carolina have all pushed themselves into the top 25 team picture.
Early season key games saw Oklahoma defeat Florida St and Clemson beat Auburn that ended the nation’s longest winning streak.
The top ranked Sooners beat a stubborn Florida St club that made several key mistakes in big situations that affected the outcome. Sooner safety Javon Harris intercepted two passes in top-ranked Oklahoma's 23-13 victory at No. 5 Florida St. His first interception return of 69 yards set up an Oklahoma field goal. His second interception, with 5:34 remaining in the game, assured the Sooners of the victory. He also had three unassisted tackles and one pass break up.
The Clemson Tigers beat the Auburn Tigers convincingly with a 38-24 thrashing that ended their national best 17 game winning streak. The Tigers relied on QB Tajh Boyd who threw for 386 yards and 4 TDs in a huge victory for Clemson. The Tigers faces Florida St this week in a key ACC matchup.
Florida continued their dominance of Tennessee with a key 33-23 victory in a SEC matchup. Senior all-purpose weapon Chris Rainey had an outstanding game where he totaled 233 yards that included an 83 yard TD reception. That overall total includes 108 yards rushing, 104 yard receiving and a blocked punt that lead to a score. Rainey is the first Gator to rush and catch for over 100 yards in the same game since Percy Harvin accomplished that in 2007.
Looking for good contests this week. Alabama meets Arkansas, LSU faces to West Virginia, Oklahoma St plays Texas A&M, Michigan faces San Diego St and Georgia Tech plays North Carolina in an ACC matchup of unbeatens.
West Virginia won a wild 37-31 contest vs Maryland where they barely held off a strong Terps' comeback. The victory gives the Mountaineers an early advantage in the Big East. They face their biggest home contest in years when they host highly regarded LSU this Saturday in a big intersectional matchup.
South Carolina held over a tough Navy club to go 3-0 in the early action. The offense once again relied on workhorse sophomore running back Marcus Lattimore. Lattimore rushed 37 times for a 246 yards and 3 TDs. Lattimore touched the ball 26 of 37 second half plays for SC as he went over the 100 yard rushing mark for the third straight game.
Offensive Player of the Week
Chris Rainey - Florida - Senior - Running Back
The senior tailback Chris Rainey totaled 233 all-purpose yards and 1 TD as the 16th-ranked Gators defeated Tennessee, 33-23. Rainey rushed for 108 yards (on 21 carries) and caught two passes for 104 yards, including a 83-yard TD as the Gators improved to 3-0, 1-0 in the SEC. He also blocked a punt that lead to a score.

One of the best performances of the young season was turned in by Rutgers wideout Mohamed Sanu this week who set a school- and Big East Conference-record with 16 catches for 176 yards and 2 TDs. Rutgers (2-1) knocked error-prone Ohio from the unbeaten ranks with a 38-26 victory on Saturday. Sanu defied double coverage to set new Big East and school records for receptions.
His total catches broke the Rutgers record of 13 that he tied two weeks ago vs North Carolina. It also broke the single-game mark of 13 for a Big East receiver. Sanu has 36 catches for 363 yards and four TDs this season. This was his first game with two receiving touchdowns.
"Mohamed is a freak," one NFL scout oper said. "He is an athlete, a freak athlete. Just covering him gets you better. You always have to have your A game when covering him.
Oklahoma St. made a thrilling comeback to beat Texas A& M for their first loss on Saturday. The Cowboys won a wild 30-29 games over then-No. 8 Texas A&M. Oklahoma St's Brandon Weeden has been named the Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week. The senior threw for a school-record 438 yards in the win.

Ingram, a 6-2, 276-pounder scored his third TD of the season, this time falling on a fumble in the end zone in the second quarter for the Gamecocks’ first points in the victory. He was also credited with four tackles on the night, three for losses that accounted for 24 yards, and a pair of sacks. He also broke up one pass.
Ingram led a stellar SC defense that limited the Commodores to just five first downs and 77 total yards on 48 plays, an average of 1.6 yards per play. Only two of Vandy’s 14 drives lasted longer than four plays and only one gained more than 10 yards.

The first week of October saw a huge number of high scoring games with several major comebacks. The top clubs solidified their highly rated spots with LSU, Oklahoma and Alabama staking claim to the top three ranked positions. Alabama drilled Florida while LSU wore down a stubborn West Virginia club and Oklahoma pounded an overmatched Ball St. team.
A number of teams hold a 5-0 record with 13 teams overall undefeated after the first weekend of October. No clubs has been more impressive during the early action than Clemson. The Tigers beat a good Virginia Tech team 23-3 and it was not even that close. What is so impressive is that the Tigers have beaten three consecutive top 25 clubs, Auburn, Florida St and Virginia Tech that elevates them into the top ten rankings this week.
This week
The “Red River Rivalry” features two highly rated clubs, undefeated Oklahoma and Texas this weekend. The two clubs have been the flagships schools in the Big 12 conference over the past decade. Both face critical decisions about their future in the Big 12 and in particular if they intend to stay together and enter a new conference together. Auburn meets Arkansas in another battle of top 20 clubs with SEC implications.
Georgia at Tennessee is one of the more interesting matchups in the first half of the schedule. Both are in the SEC Eastern division and each club is trying to recapture its former glory after in few down seasons. With Florida and South Carolina leading the division, the winner of the Georgia vs SC matchup will have a strong say in the Eastern title.
Speaking of the SEC, the Texas A&M Aggies who just joined the conference for the 2012 season has squandered 17 and 18 point halftime leads the past two weeks that were eventually losing efforts. In the loss to Arkansas this week, it was for the Aggies 7th consecutive loss to a SEC team since 1995. Fortunately, the Aggies face only a Big 12 schedule the remainder of the 2011 season.
Big Ten Baptism
Wisconsin faced a major test in a battle of Big Ten unbeatens vs Nebraska. The Badgers stormed to a 41-14 lead through the first three quarters and spoiled Nebraska's Big Ten debut with a 48-17 thumping. The Badger's ground game was once again outstanding behind tailback Montee Bell who ran for 151 yards and 4 TDs. The Badgers amassed 486 total yards, averaging 6.9 yards per play. They intercepted Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez three times.
Wisconsin's QB Russell Wilson connected on 14-of-20 pass attempts for 255 passing yards as the Badgers pounded Nebraska 48-17 in their first conference matchup. In only five games as a Badger, Wilson has thrown for at least two touchdowns in each game and has totaled 1,391 yards in the air. He currently ranks as the nation's second-most efficient passer and has thrown for a TD in 29 straight games, the longest current streak in the nation.
Nebraska has now lost eight straight games vs Top 10 clubs on the road since 1997. They have allowed 44 points a game in those games. This week Ohio St. travels to Lincoln, Nebraska in their Big Ten home opener. The Ohio St. program is falling after losing HC Jim Tressel after an NCAA series of violations. Last week, the Buckeyes lost to a good Michigan St. club 10-7 with their TD coming in the final seconds. Their offensive line gave up 9 sacks as their attack struggled the entire game. The Cornhuskers will be loaded for Bear after the Wisconsin lost in an attempt to get their first Big Ten victory.
Alabama remained undefeated with a dominant performance vs Florida. The Crimson Tide shut down Florida in a huge SEC road game in Tallahassee. The Tide put on a dominant performance with 38-10 thrashing of the Gators. The Tide defense prevailed once again and held the Gators to just 15 rushing yards. Alabama's tailback Trent Richardson ran for 181 yards on 29 carries, both career highs, and scored the first rushing TD that Florida has allowed this season.
Arkansas junior QB Tyler Wilson threw for a school record of 510 yards while leading the Hogs to an amazing 18 point comeback win over Texas A&M. Wilson replaced Ryan Mallett who entered the NFL Draft last winter. Through five games, Wilson has just short of 1,500 passing yards on 69.9% completion rate with 10 TDs, and three interceptions in a strong early season.
SMU earned a dramatic 40-33 overtime win over their arch-rival TCU to improve their record to 4-1 for the first time in a generation. The huge victory is SMU's first over a ranked opponent in six seasons as the Mustangs are off to their best start since going 5-1 to open the 1986 season. In the process, SMU ended TCU's 22-game home winning streak that dated back to the 2007 season. SMU also notched its first non-conference road win since 1998.
One of the season’s best performances was turned in by Pittsburgh running back Ray Graham un the Panthers victory over South Florida Thursday night. He rushed for 229 yards and 2 TDs with 42 yards receiving.
South Carolina senior DE Melvin Ingram was selected as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday’s loss to Auburn. Ingram recorded 11 total tackles, including eight solo stops. He had 4.5 TFL including a career-best 3.5 sacks. He also intercepted a pass and was credited with two QB hurries.
The Gamecock defense limited Auburn to just 3.9 yards per play in the contest and 18 points below its season scoring average. Ingram is now the SEC’s leader in both sacks (5.5) and TFL (7.5). He has scored three TDs this season while being honored three times in the SEC's weekly awards.

The run for the national championship is starting to take shape with teams like Oklahoma, LSU and Alabama dominating the top three spots in the ranking. The top three clubs continue to impress and dominant opponents. Oklahoma crushed a Texas club that was ranked in the top ten, LSU thrashed a Florida team that was ranked in the top 15 teams and Alabama shutout an out manned Vanderbilt team.
LSU and Alabama are on a collision course for their Nov. 5th matchup in Tuscaloosa. It has national and SEC title implications especially with the conference West division most likely on the line. Both clubs scheduled their bye week prior to this matchup. If you like defensive football in this present climate of high scoring passing games, the Bama Tide vs the LSU Tigers has the makings of a classic late season game. More on that over the next few weeks.
The top three are not alone among the unbeatens with Wisconsin, Stanford, Oklahoma St, Boise St and Stanford all perfect approaching the halfway point of the regular season. Other undefeated teams like Michigan, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Kansas St. and Houston must prove they are top ten contenders and not pretenders benefiting from soft early schedules. Most of these clubs will be tested with tough road games this week.
The “Red River Rivalry” game between two highly rated clubs, featured undefeated Oklahoma and Texas last weekend. The only thing Red from the classic annual game was Texas blood after Oklahoma took them to school in every facet of the game. The Sooners defense pounded Texas with 8 sacks and a school record 3 defensive TDs. The two arch rivals have been the flagship schools in the Big 12 over the past decades and each face key decisions about their future that will have a huge impact on the Big 12 landscape. TCU joined the Big 12 after their win over San Diego St. They had joined the Big East in June and are currently in their final season in the MWC.
Baylor behind star QB Robert Griffin remains the top team in Texas. Griffin led the Bears to a 49 to 26 victory over Iowa St t obring their record to 4-1 this season. Griffin ran for over 100 yards and directed a strong ground attack that includes over 200 yards and 3 TDs by tailback Terrance Ganaway. Auburn met Arkansas in another battle of top 20 clubs with SEC Western title implications. Arkansas continued to show a potent big play offense behind QB Tyler Wilson.
This week
After the “Red River Rivalry” blowout, Texas hosts Oklahoma St this week. The Cowboys may be the most explosive offense in the nation behind QB Brandon Weeden and wideout Justin Blackmon. Oklahoma St. has two undefeated teams remaining on their schedule in Kansas St and Oklahoma. The Big 12 might have their own classic late season top ten matchup in Oklahoma if the Sooners and Cowboys run the table as expected to their season finale matchup in Stillwater.
Texas and Oklahoma have been the flagship schools in the Big 12 over the past decades. Both face key decisions about their future in the Big 12 and in particular if they intend to stay or enter a new conference together.
In another interesting matchup this week, Arizona St (5-1) goes to Eugene to face the Oregon (4-1)Ducks. Both teams are vying for the Pac 12 title. Arizona St. has been a tease over recent seasons, showing talent to beat average clubs, but always coming up short vs top 20 teams. Going into Eugene is a major test for the Sun Devils. The Ducks better not have their eyes on their upcoming contest at Stanford on November 12.

'College Football Monday' Ten Clubs Still Unbeaten

The march to the national championship continues with teams like Oklahoma, LSU and Alabama remaining perfect at the midseason mark. The ranks of the unbeatens fell to just 10 clubs after last weekend. The top three spots remain the same in the ranking with Oklahoma and LSU earning the #1spot in different polls. The top eight clubs in every poll is currently undefeated continue to impress and dominant opponents.
The top three are not alone among the unbeatens with Wisconsin, Stanford, Oklahoma St, Boise St and Stanford all perfect approaching the halfway point of the regular season. Other previously undefeated teams Michigan, Georgia Tech and Illinois all fell last weekend. Houston and Kansas St. remain undefeated and rank in the Top 20 teams. Both teams must prove they are top ten contenders and beat higher rated clubs in the coming weeks.
All-American receiver, Ryan Broyles of Oklahoma set a new NCAA career reception record. He caught 13 passes for 217 yards to bring his career total to 326 receptions to set a new mark. He set the new record with a 57 yard TD pass for Landry Jones as Oklahoma beat Kansas 47-17. Oklahoma remains #1 in a few polls as they enter the key Big 12 matchups over the next five weeks.
Wideout Broyles is both quick and fast while displaying sure hands and the run after the catch ability to line up on the outside or in the slot. He is highly developed to help a pro offense early in his career. He started his career working with All American QB Sam Bradford and will end operating with young junior QB Landry Jones who has the skill set to be a special passer with further development.
Last year’s Biletnikoff Award winner, OSU wideout Robert Blackmon has 53 catches for 608 yards and 7 TDs this season. After last weekend, he is only 102 receiving yards shy of taking sole possession of 3rd place on the all-time Oklahoma St list. Teammate first-team all-Big 12 QB Brandon Weeden is among the national leaders in nearly every relevant passing category. He ranks 3rd all-time at Oklahoma St in both passing yards and total offense and he has rewritten the single-game and single-season school record books.
QB Keith Price of Washington has received little fanfare, including here but has quietly had an outstanding season. This past week, he threw for over 300 yards for the 6th time this season as the Huskies scored over 30 points for the 6th consecutive game. The Huskies are 5-1 for the first time in 10 years and 3-0 in the Pac 12 for the first time in 14 years. Price may not be mentioned with Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin, Russell Wilson or Landry Jones, but he has been just as productive in helping the Huskies for a surprising 5-1 record. Washington faces a major test next week when they travel to play undefeated Stanford for first place in the Pac 12 North division at stake. Clemson struggled to stay undefeated but WR Sammy Watkins of Clemson had an incredible performance in the Tigers win over Maryland. He totaled 345 all-purpose yardage.
Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill passed for 415 yards and career-best 6 TDs as the 21st-ranked Aggies defeated 20th-ranked Baylor, 55-28. Tannehill completed 25-of-37 passes and threw for scores of 68, 7, 8, 5, 68 and 47 yards as Texas A&M (4-2, 2-1 in Big 12) racked up a season-high 681 yards of total offense. Ryan Tannehill was named the Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week after leading the Aggies. With the Aggies down 7-3 after the first quarter, Tannehill tossed three touchdowns in the 2nd quarter to give the Aggies a 24-14 advantage at halftime. He would continue his impressive play in the second half, throwing for three more scores and clinching the victory.
Tannehill’s TD numbers are career highs and match the second-highest total in Aggies history. He also collected 55 rushing yards on the day to finish with 470 yards of total offense, the second-most in school history. On the year, Tannehill has posted 1,742 passing yards and has connected for 13 TDs. He averages 328.8 yards of total offense per game, ranking him ninth in the country. Tannehill and the No. 17-ranked Aggies (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) will travel to face conference foe Iowa St (3-3, 0-3 Big 12) this Saturday.
DE Derrick Shelby of Utah had a big game as the Utes defeated Pittsburgh, 26-14, on the road. Shelby had a team-best seven tackles (6 solo), including 2.5 for losses, 1.5 QB sacks and intercepted a pass which he returned 21 yards for a TD. With the win, Utah improved to 3-3 on the season. They sacked Pitt QB 6 times with 3 FF that were instrumental in their 26-14 victory on the road. The Utes held talented Pittsburgh tailback Ray Graham to just 46 yards rushing. The Panthers fell to a disappointing 3-4 at the midway point of the season.
Wisconsin has given up just 58 points on the season while the Badgers have scored 59 points in two games this year alone. The Badgers have allowed just seven TDs the entire season, or 10 fewer than their tailback Montee Ball has scored this fall. Wisconsin faces a major test this week when they travel to Michigan St.
Michigan St. beat Michigan 28-14 for their fourth consecutive victory in this interstate rivalry. The victory pushed Michigan St into the Top 15 teams while Michigan fell from their 11th ranking with their first loss of the season. The Spartans face the acid tests over the next few weeks with a critical Big Ten game at home with Wisconsin and then a road contest at Nebraska. The winner in those games will lay claim to best in the Big Ten with BCS postseason matchups.
Michigan St came out with an attitude at home vs Michigan and jumped all over the Wolverines, showing a very physical brand of play. They held QB Denard Robinson to just 9 of 24 passing for 123 yards and 1 TD. He left the game when slammed down hard in the 4th quarter. He was very ineffective throwing the ball while being contained to the pocket.
This week
Unbeaten #6 Wisconsin travels to #16 Michigan St at 8 p.m. on ESPN
Undefeated # 8 Stanford goes against #25 Washington at home
In another interesting matchup this week, Clemson meets North Carolina at home. Both ACC teams are vying for postseason honors. Clemson dodged a bullet at Maryland last week, coming from an 18 point deficit to remain undefeated with a wild 56-45 victory. North Carolina lost last week at Miami and faces a pivotal matchup if they expect to earn a quality postseason invitation.

The march toward a major late season matchup continues with both LSU and Alabama set for a classic on November 5th after another winning weekend. Both clubs scheduled bye weeks before this SEC showdown with two weeks to get ready for the contest that will have huge national and conference replications. We will have a game matchup and more to say about this potential classic next week.
The ranks of the unbeatens fell to just 8 clubs after last weekend with two top five clubs, Oklahoma and Wisconsin both falling in tough conference matchups.
Oklahoma was ambushed by a tough Texas Tech team that quietly has moved into the Big 12 contention picture. They are one of the sleeper clubs through the early season with their only two losses by close margins vs Texas A&M and Kansas St, both top 25 teams.
Wisconsin made a strong comeback vs Michigan St on Saturday night only to lose on a miracle Hail Mary pass on the final play of the game. The Badgers struggled stopping the Spartan passing attack and got behind that took them out of their normal offensive game plan.
Both Oklahoma and Wisconsin ranked in the top 5 clubs in every poll with both currently marginal top ten clubs. The top two LSU and Alabama hold a huge point advantage in the weekly polls over the remaining six undefeated teams.
Stanford, Oklahoma St, Boise St and Clemson all follow the top two ranked teams in different order according the poll. Houston ranks in just the top 20 clubs while Kansas St. finally joined the top 10 standings after another strong performance. The Wildcats play Oklahoma in Manhattan, Kansas in a major test for the K-State run at the Big 12 title.
Houston All-American QB Case Keenum set a new NCAA career passing record. Keenum moved past former Hawaiii QB Timmy Chang when he passed 376 yards and 6 TDs this week that eclipsed the career record of 16,910 yards passing. He set the new record with a 30 yard pass early in the Houston 63-28 romp over Marshall. Keenum continues his recovery from an early 2010 knee injury that cost him that season. He has the Cougars positioned to cause a major BCS uproar if they run their soft CUSA schedule as expected.
QB Tajh Boyd of Clemson had another huge performance in the Tigers 59 to 38 victory over ACC rival North Carolina. Boyd tied a school record with 5 TD passes as Clemson went to 8-0 for the first time in 11 years. He lead a Tiger offense that totaled 450 yards with their defense causing 6 Tar Heel turnovers. Boyd has entered the Heisman Trophy award talks over his performance with big games at Georgia Tech, NC Stat and South Carolina huge tests for his qualifications.
Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill passed for 263 yards and 2 TDs while the Aggie tandem of tailbacks, Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael each went over the 100 yard rushing mark in their win over Iowa St.
Texas A&M improved to (5-2, 3-1 in Big 12) with their third straight conference victory. Tannehill gives them an accurate mobile passer and the combination of Gray and Michael gives them the most potent running combo in the nation. After this week’s game vs Missouri, the Aggies face Oklahoma and Kansas St on the road in games that will have major Big 12 title implications.
In a very quiet way, Penn St HC Joe Paterno tied legendary Grambling HC Eddie Robinson with his 408th career victory. Paterno lead Penn St to a win over Northwestern that sets up a possible new career record with a win over Illinois this Saturday at home. Penn St is currently 7-1 and 4-0 in the Big Ten in a somewhat surprising performance. They face a killer final stretch after Illinois this week with Nebraska, Ohio St and Wisconsin left on the schedule that could be the acid test for their final ranking and postseason.
Wisconsin had given up just 58 points prior to the lost to Michigan St. 37-31. The Badgers had allowed just seven TDs the entire season entering the MSU game before allowing 4 TDs in their first loss of the 2011 season.
This Week
#9 Oklahoma at #8 Kansas St and #11 Michigan St at #14 Nebraska are two of the top marquee matchups for the upcoming weekend.

LSU and Oklahoma St. Win Huge Thrillers for SEC and Big 12 Leadership
Offensive Player of the Week – QB Brandon Weeden – Oklahoma St
Defensive Player of the Week - LB Danny Trevathan - Kentucky

The matchup between #1 LSU and #2 Alabama became everything advertised if you like defensive football. Both clubs displayed physical dominant defenses that controlled the line of scrimmage that turned the classic into a field goal contrest that went into overtime. LSU prevailed 9-6 on the road that earns them a huge lead for the #1 ranking entering the final month of the regular season. They have the lead in the SEC West division to win the conference title that has dominated the national title five consecutive seasons.
The ranks of the unbeatens fell to just 5 clubs with the Alabama loss. Oklahoma St. remained perfect winning a Big 12 thriller vs once beaten Kansas St. 52-45. QB Brandon Weeden threw for a school record 502 yards vs the soft KSU secondary. What a contrast the two highly anticipated SEC and Big 12 clashes were with 15 total points scored by LSU/Alabama vs 97 points in the OSU/ KSU explosion.
Stanford, Oklahoma St and Boise St rank in the top 5 clubs in every poll with perfect records. Each face a major test this week. The Cardinal meets Oregon in a huge Pac 12 matchup while OSU meets upset minded Texas Tech and Boise St faces TCU.
All-American QB Case Keenum set another new NCAA career passing record. He moved past former Hawaiii QB Timmy Chang when he passed for 407 yards that eclipsed the record of 17,072 yards passing. Keenum continues his recovery from an early 2010 knee injury that cost him the season. He has the Cougars positioned to cause a major BCS uproar if they run their soft CUSA schedule. They are currently 9-0 while averaging 62 points per game over the last four games under the direction of Keenum.
LB Danny Trevathan of Kentucky had yet another monster game in Saturday's 30-13 win over Ole Miss. Trevathan collected 17 tackles, tying his career high, including an assisted tackle
for loss. He also had his fourth pass interception of the season, including his third-consecutive game with a pickoff. He wins our Defensive Player of the Week award.
Texas improved to (6-2, 3-2 in Big 12) with an impressive victory over Texas Tech. The Longhorns pounded the TT defense with 439 yards on the ground behind runners Joe Bergeron and Fozzy Whittaker. The victory makes Texas bowl eligible this postseason after missing out last year for the first time since the 1997 season. The Longhorns completed just two passes while building a 31-6 halftime lead.

The top ten in the BCS standings took a major shakeup as four highly ranked clubs, Oklahoma St., Oregon, Oklahoma and Clemson all fell this past weekend. Oklahoma St. got shocked by Iowa St. on Friday night 37-31 in double overtime. Oregon ran into a Trojan buzzsaw named QB Matt Barkley who lead a thrilling Southern Cal 38-35 victory. Oklahoma fell at the hands of Baylor with QB Robert Griffin toasting the Sooners for 479 yards and 4 TD passes. North Carolina St hammered Clemson 37-13, their second loss in three games. The widespread losses among top ten clubs opened up spots for undefeated Houston and Arkansas to move up quickly in the rankings.
Arkansas can throw the BCS quest for #1 into total disarray this Friday when they face top ranked LSU in their season finale. Arkansas unfortunately plays in the SEC West division that also is manned by LSU and Alabama, possibly the best two clubs in the nation. The SEC West division rank #1,2 and 3 this week, a testimony to the incredible talent in the SEC and West division in particular. Arkansas is the hottest team in the country behind QB Tyler Wilson. They have won 7 consecutive games since their September loss to Alabama. Their suspect defense has improved significantly over the past two months and has them competing for a BCS bowl appearance. If LSU wins this Friday they will play Georgia in the SEC title game. Georgia has won nine straight games since losing their first two contests this season. The streak has moved them into the top 15 in every poll with their rivalry game with Georgia Tech their finale prior to the SEC championship game.
The BCS matchup for #1 appears headed for a rematch of LSU and Alabama. That will wait until those team’s finales vs Arkansas and Auburn this week and then the tough SEC title game. LSU prevailed 9-6 earlier this season on the road that earned them a huge lead for the #1 ranking entering the final months. They hold the lead in the SEC West division in the conference that has dominated the national title for five consecutive seasons.
The ranks of the unbeatens fell to just two clubs with Houston finally joining the top ten after another easy CUSA victory over SMU. They finally play a ranked opponent in their finale this week in Tulsa that will be test their perfect season. Stanford, Oklahoma St and Virginia Tech rank in the top 5 clubs in every poll with key finales set for this weekend. The Cardinal meets Notre Dame in a huge intersectional matchup while OSU and Va Tech meets rivals Oklahoma and Virginia that could shakeup the top ten again in tough matchups.
Southern Cal QB Matt Barkley had an impressive performance in the Trojans huge 38-35 win over Oregon. With Southern Cal on NCAA probation for violations the Oregon game was the Trojans unofficial conference title game. At 9-2 this season and only cross town rival UCLA left on the schedule, the Trojans staff has done a great job keeping this club focused on the upcoming matchup. Beating Oregon and Notre Dame were solid victories to build on in the off season. Barkley is only a junior and a player who is capable of taking this program to the elite status. His fast development ranks him just behind Andrew Luck among NFL prospects.
Baylor’s QB Robert Griffin continues to impress in big game situations. Griffin had a huge game in the Bears huge win over Oklahoma. He toasted the Sooners secondary continuously, in addition to key scrambles that had the Oklahoma defense guessing all game. Both Barkley and Griffin earned Heisman Trophy consideration off strong late season games. The Heisman race is interesting this year, as every major candidate has had at least one ordinary game that has kept the award a wide open contest.

LSU and Houston Finish Regular Season As the Only Two Unbeatens
Offensive Player of the Week –
RB Trent Richardson - Alabama
Defensive Player of the Week
CB Tyrann Mathieu - LSU

The final full week of the regular 2011 season is complete with conference championship games on the agenda this week. LSU continues to establish themselves as the #1 club with an impressive 41-17 win over Arkansas after trailing 14-0 in the second quarter. The Tigers are a powerhouse who meets a hot Georgia team this week in the SEC title game. The Bulldogs have won 10 consecutive games since opening the season with two losses. LSU gained their composure vs Arkansas and drilled them with another display of power and speed that has dominated their competition against probably the toughest schedule in the nation. LSU appears headed for a rematch with Alabama who lost their only game to the Tigers 9-6 in early November. Alabama dominated Auburn in their finale to complete an excellent 11-1 season, though only good for second place in the SEC West that is occupied by LSU and Arkansas. Those three clubs ranked 1-3 entering last weekend with LSU and Alabama holding the top two spots while Arkansas fell back in the top ten.
LSU relied on a power ground game and some big plays from QB Jordan Jefferson and corner Tyrann Mathieu to blitz the Hogs. Jefferson had his best game of the season and gets the starting nod from here on thru the BCS bowl games. Mathieu may be the best defensive player in the nation after another outstanding performance. ‘Honey Badger’ has a great nose for the ball and packs a wallop when he gets there to force turnovers. In the key win over Arkansas, he had a team-best eight solo tackles, forced two fumbles and recovered one as the top-ranked Tigers completed their regular season undefeated. Mathieu added a 92-yard punt return for a TD as LSU remained undefeated (12-0, 8-0 in SEC West) and earned a spot in next week’s SEC Championship Game.
Alabama running back Trent Richardson rushed for a career-high 203 yards (on 27 carries) as the second-ranked Crimson Tide defeated Auburn, 42-14, in the Iron Bowl. Richardson added a five-yard touchdown reception as Alabama improved to 11-1, 7-1 in the SEC West. Richardson is one of the top Heisman Trophy candidates entering the final weekend where he will sit out waiting for the Tides feat in the postseason.
Michigan finally beat Ohio St. 40-34 that snapped a 7 game losing streak to their archrival. Michigan QB Denard Robinson accounted for 5 TDs as the Wolverines finished 10-2. Robinson ran for 170 yards on 26 carries, in addition to going 14 of 17 for 167 yards in a terrific overall performance. The Michigan win was huge for first year coach Brady Hoke who will lead the Wolverines in a top tier bowl matchup. Ohio St. named Urban Meyers their new head coach on Monday. The former Florida head coach sat out this year due to minor medical issues. He lead the Gators to two national championships and returns to Ohio St. where he was an assistant coach prior to starting his head coaching career at Bowling Green.
UCLA ran into the Trojans in their cross town rivalry. QB Matt Barkley has been in a zone for weeks and torched the Bruins 50-0. Barkley went 35 of 42 for 423 yards and 6 TDs that ended the Trojans season at 10-2. The Trojans are under NCAA suspension for any postseason activity, though they would rank in the top ten easily if eligible. Barkley had an outstanding season and closed with as impressive a run as any player in the nation, though any Heisman talk was most likely too little too late. UCLA finished 6-6 and earned a berth in the Pac 12’s first championship game vs Oregon. Figure that out.
Houston finished undefeated that ranks them in the top ten. QB Case Keenum broke school, conference and NCAA records weekly over the final months that might earn an invite to the Heisman Trophy presentation. Where Houston falls in the bowl season will be interesting with their perfect record intact entering the CUSA title game vs Southern Miss. They hope to possibly challenging for the BCS title if LSU loses over their final two games.
Cincinnati's Isaiah Pead had two punt returns for 54 yards, nine receptions for 112 yards and a TD, and 17 carries for 80 yards and a TD in a 30-13 win over Syracuse on Nov. 26. He finished with 246 all-purpose yards in the game. Pead's performance helped keep the Bearcats alive for a Big East Championship and a BCS bowl berth.
Georgia's Brandon Boykin had an impressive showing against Georgia Tech over the weekend. Boykin will face off with LSU this weekend in the Southeastern Conference Championship game in Atlanta, Georgia. Boykin caught one pass for 28 yards, returned two punts for 4 yards and returned one kick for 60 yards in a 31-17 win over Georgia Tech. On defense Boykin recorded two total tackles, including assisting on a tackle for loss.
The BCS matchup for #1 appears headed for a rematch of LSU and Alabama after last weekend. LSU-Alabama Rematch Guarantees Another National Title for SEC Team
Photo - CB Tyrann Mathieu - LSU
The much anticipated rematch of #1 LSU and #2 Alabama is finally here after a long bowl season. The BCS national title game has built to a fever pitch over the past month with two teams that guarantees the 6th consecutive SEC national title winner. This classic title game has all the makings of another tough slugfest that features two standout defenses. The regular season’s Game of the Century was a classic old time battle where both clubs displayed a strong physical presence and dominant defenses that attack the line of scrimmage. LSU prevailed 9-6 in overtime as Alabama as the Tide missed four FGs. No team scored a TD in the SEC clash in Tuscaloosa. That’s quite a contrast to the wild weekly shootouts in college football recently.
Each title game club likes to run the ball and play field position while relying on efficient QB play. The defensive play of both teams is worth the price of admission. Each club is battle tested after surviving the tough SEC West Division that features both LSU and Alabama, in addition to Arkansas. They could all finish in the top five nationally after tonight. The winner tonight has the claim to undisputed #1 national ranking. Winning the SEC has translated into 5 consecutive national titles. Tonight’s matchup guarantees another SEC national title winner.
One of the keys to this game will Bama star tailback Trent Richardson who had an impressive performance in the first matchup. Richardson ran for 169 yards in the November loss. He has been the catalyst for many Tide victories over recent years that warranted high Heisman Trophy award consideration. He rushed for 20 TDs with almost 1000 rushing over the second half of the 2011 season. Another big effort tonight could spell the difference in the title contest. The LSU front seven will be fully tested by Richardson and may be the critical deciding factor in the outcome.
Both LSU and Alabama have incredible secondaries that already rank with NFL defenses. This game features potentially five #1 defensive back picks from both clubs over just the next two draft classes. Tiger corners sophomore Tyrann Mathieu and junior Morris Claiborne have been huge impact defenders over the 2011 season. He has been a difference maker in virtually every game especially key matchups. Both teams have had weeks to prepare that has contributed to the hype of this classic late season matchup.
Prediction - LSU 16 - Alabama 13
Game Within the Game Matchup
LSU Receiver Rueben Randle vs Alabama Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick
Great matchup of two future high #1 NFL Draft picks, maybe this April. This game features countless high draft selections especially on the defensive side of the ball. There could be as many as 8 defensive backs in this game that starting eventually in the NFL.
Wideout Rueben Randle is a former five-star recruit entering LSU who struggled over his first two seasons. He had a major breakout season despite QB changes for the Tigers in a rotation of starters. He has benefitted from more consistent play at QB that has allowed him to start to realize his enormous athletic potential.
Randle has put up new career receptions total and ranked among the SEC leaders in receiving TDs despite double coverage. He has a big lean 6’4’’, 205 lb frame with a great skill set for the position. He has the vertical speed to get deep consistently and the agility, hands and run after the catch ability to take the underneath passes and make a big play.
Bama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick has rare physical skills for the position. He has great size at 6’3” and plays a physical brand of fotoball that HC Nick Saban plays and demands. He has an NFL safety body with cornerback athleticism and skills. His combination of size, hands and speed ranks him the top cornerback currently with the development to be one of the blue chip prospects for the NFL Draft 2012. Defenders Mark Barron and Robert Lester may be the best two safetie in the nation. Linebackers Don’t’a Hightower and Courtney Upshaw are NFL ready after being battle tested in the Nick Saban scheme and tough SEC.
