NFL Draft 2023 – First Round Signings

Frank Coyle/ Pro Scout

The 2023 NFL Draft completed all draft choices to signed contracts with the addition of Seattle corner Devon Witherspoon with a four-year deal. Witherspoon was both the last 1st round and overall draft to sign.

The first-round selections are now all signed with lucrative signing bonuses ranging from $5.5 million for Felix Anudike-Uzomah of the Chiefs with the last pick of the round to Bryce Young of the Panthers with a $24.6 million bonus with the 1st overall selection.

Devon Witherspoon held out of the initial days of camp until he got his deal done. With few reps missed in the opening week, he still has the inside track of earning the starting job with a strong camp.

NFL Supplemental Draft 2023

NFL Supplemental Draft 2023

The NFL will conduct the Supplemental Draft 2023 on Tuesday, July 11th for players who rescind their remaining college eligibility. This draft has been a short process annually that considers special situations for players that are at least three years removed from high school.

Two players, wideouts Milton Wright of Purdue and Malachi Wideman of Jackson State are the only two entrees. They are expected to be possibly drafted with late-rounds. Recent NFL supplemental drafts have been completed without any players being chosen.

Draft Insiders’ – NFL Supplemental Draft 2023 Report will be available July 10 – Free for Subscribers

All 32 teams will participate in the weighted process that is divided into three tiers with seven prospects entered for this year’s selection draft. Teams with six wins or less from last season will make up the first group, followed by a second group of non-playoff teams and finally a third group of the twelve playoff teams. Each team submits the name of the players via email that they want to draft with the round they would like to select them. The club with the highest selection will be awarded the player. In the case of two teams drafting the same player in a round, the club with the worse record last season will win the prospect. Players not selected in this draft class will then become free agents eligible to sign with any team.

Any team that uses a selection in the Supplemental Draft will forfeit their choice in the corresponding round of the NFL Draft 2024 The new draft prospects will be considered part of the rookie salary pool along with the players from the NFL Draft 2023 and they must fit under the current contract structure and overall salary cap. No players have been drafted the previous past three summers. In 2012, the Browns used their 2nd round pick on wideout Josh Gordon, the only selection chosen in the process. He was a Pro Bowl receiver who set new NFL records several years ago. But he has also been suspended often for failing drug and alcohol tests and is currently out of the league.

Most prospects in a Supplemental class provide little initial impact because of the late signing that caused them to miss all of the OTAs and mini-camp practices. The NFL office has considered terminating this draft process after only minimal interest by clubs. Bids are weighted according to how a team performed the previous season.

NFL Fifth-Year Option Decisions

NFL Fifth-Year Option Decisions for First Round Players from the NFL Draft 2020

The deadline for NFL teams to exercise the fifth-year option on the rookie contracts for 2020 first-round picks was Tuesday, May 2. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was the first from that class to have his option picked up.

All players selected in the first round of the NFL draft sign four-year contracts with a team option for a fifth season. After the player finishes his third year in the league, clubs must decide if they want to exercise the option.

Below are the 28 first-round picks from the 2020 draft eligible for fifth-year options and their statuses ahead of the deadline. Three first-round players from that class — Henry Ruggs III (#12 overall), Damon Arnette (#19) and Isaiah Wilson (#29) — are no longer in the league and, therefore, are not eligible for a fifth-year option. Ruggs and Arnette were selected by the Las Vegas Raiders while Wilson was chosen by Tennessee. Jeff Gladney, the #31 overall pick in 2020 who played for both Minnesota and Arizona, died tragically in a car accident in May 2022.

Fifth-Year Option Deadline for clubs to exercise the option was Tuesday, May 2.

Under the new CBA signed in 2020, the option is fully guaranteed once exercised (previously it was only guaranteed for injury).

Four Tiers of Salary

  1. Multiple Pro Bowls: Players who made more than two Pro Bowls on the original ballot (not alternate) will have their fifth-year base salary equal to the franchise-tag tender at their position.
  2. One Pro Bowl: Players who made one Pro Bowl on the original ballot (not alternate) have their fifth-year base salary equal to the transition tag at their position.
  3. Playing time: These players didn’t make a Pro Bowl, but their snap counts during their first three seasons meet one of the following three requirements: a) 75 percent or greater in two of their first three seasons b) an average of 75 percent or greater over all three seasons. c) 50 percent or greater over all three seasons. These players will have their fifth-year base salary calculated from the average of the 3rd- to 25th-highest salaries at their position over the past five seasons.
  4. Basic: Players who do not meet any of the requirements above will have their fifth-year base salary calculated from the average of the 3rd- to 25th-highest salaries at their position over the past five seasons.

NFL Draft 2023 – Edge Defenders Head Strong Defensive Class

NFL Draft 2023 – Edge Defenders Head Strong Defensive Class

The NFL Draft 2023 is strongest on the defensive side of the ball and the edge class is the leader. This year 5-7 prospects will probably fall in the first round with a total of 12-15 selected in the top 100 selections. Edge defenders are the most important defensive position with the ability to change games with one play. This year’s group is a high quality class with many well developed prospects to step in as rookies and make a difference. Clubs will invest heavy here with many prospects demanding a top selection, making this position the riskiest on the defensive side of the ball.

Edge Defenders – Grade: A

    Positional Overview:

This year’s edge defenders’ class is a very strong group which could produce as many as six #1 picks. There are several blue-chip prospects at the top and probably 5 could go in the top 25 selections. There could be as many as 12-15 in the top three rounds with as many as 20+ thru the middle rounds. Will Anderson is the best defender in this draft class and could be a top three overall pick. He is NFL ready and a three-down starter.  He is an explosive edge defender and the best of this special class of edge rushers. He figures in the top few selections. Tyree Wilson is a complete fast-rising player who figures in the top ten selections. He could surprise and has the freakish athleticism to fit both NFL fronts in two positions. Keion White figures in the top 40 players. He is well developed and can be a day one starter and difference maker. Lukas Van Ness had an impressive final season and displayed a special burst off the edge. He is rated a top 15 selection with a prospect with impact ability in either scheme. Ade Adebawore is a player on the rise and coveted by contenders in the first round to plug and play. He is an emerging edge rusher who may be the wild card in the top 30-40 selections. Twelve prospects figure in the top 100 picks and fit the edge rusher role. Will McDonald, Zack Harrison and Felix Anudike-Uzomah are quality edge rushers with fine production and have the developed talent to start in either front. Tuli Tuipulotu figures both outside and inside and could fit best in a five-technique position. There should be an expected run throughout the top 150 picks especially from the 2nd thru the 4th rounds. With the huge demand for rushers, clubs will draft into this deep group for prospects. Expect approximately 25-30 prospects chosen over the three-days with the importance of rushers playing a huge part in game strategy. This is a top-heavy group and deep class through the middle rounds.

          NFL Teams in need:

  1. Cardinals           5. Colts
  2. Broncos              6. Falcons
  3. Chiefs                  7. Jaguars
  4. Saints                  8. Texans
